U of Chicago Admission Officers' Corner

As we all know by now, this forum has been blessed by the regular participation of an official representative of the University of Chicago. As a little token of CC's appreciation, I thought Libby Pearson and her fellow officers should have a dedicated space for the purpose of posting important messages or simply expressing their thoughts on relevant issues.

To our posters, please do NOT use this thread to post questions or comments. This thread will be stickied for easy access, but is also meant to remain as uncluttered as possible.

College Confidential hopes that Libby and other Chicago admission officers will find this little "corner" helpful.

Watch out, it's an admissions counselor!

Hi everyone.

I'm an admissions counselor at the University of Chicago, and I'm here to answer any and all questions you might have. I'll be popping in and out of forums as time allows, but feel free to contact me or anyone else in the admissions office if you have questions.

As you know, the application launched today. If you've inquired to the University of Chicago before (i.e. you've gone on a tour, went to an info session, or returned our search mailing after you took the SAT), you should be receiving one next week. I hope that's how you spell receiving.

Or you can apply online at http://uncommonapplication.uchicago.edu

Or you can read the application blog at http://uncommonapplication07-08.blogspot.com/

Thanks for reading. I'm looking forward to hearing from you.

Cool! My own little space!

Well, something I thought you'd like to see are our new set of statistics for the Class of 2010. They will be further fleshed out in the coming weeks.

http://collegeadmissions.uchicago.edu/level3.asp?id=377

just curious, Libby, seeing how Chicago's SAT scores have risen every year, what prompted them to fall this year by a significant portion. The class statistics, evident by the breakdown by SAT ranges and the SAT range itself, seem less impressive than those in years before.

I wouldn't say that they fell by a very significant portion. Also, I think that nationwide test scores were rising and rising, and then they fell this year. Our pool reflected that.

Freshman applicants who want to request an alumni interview can now do so on the online application. If you already have an account, just log in and click "Request an alumni interview." If you do not have an account, you can create one at http://uncommonapplication.uchicago.edu

If you have filled out a paper Basic Information Form, you have an account online; we just haven't told you about it yet. Email me (questions@phoenix.uchicago.edu) with your full name and hometown to get your username and password.

Transfer IV requests will become available in January.

You do not have to fill out an application before having or requesting your interview, and you are under no obligation to apply if you have an interview on or off campus.

Alumni interview requests are closing tomorrow for early action candidates. I want to make sure that everyone knows how to request an alumni interview. Just go onto the online application and click "Request an alumni interview." You don't have to submit your application.

New development:

Alumni interview requests for EA applicants will end on Friday, October 20. This is a week-long extension, to give you time to read the email we sent Saturday (the October Update) and request your interview.

Libby,

I went to the website today (10/20) to schedule an alumni interview and got the following message:

"Please note that the deadline to request an alumni interview has passed."

Can you help?

Email or PM me with your applicant's name, and I'll make sure the request goes through.

A note about credentials...

We just sent an email to students whose applications remain incomplete:

================================

As of this date, your University of Chicago Early Action Application
remains incomplete. It is likely that whatever is not here has gone
astray, though we assume that you and your school have made
every effort to send all material in a timely way. We still have time
to complete your file, to read it, and to render a decision in December.
Let us work together to complete your application.

Please go to the Uncommon application homepage. Enter your username and password, and click "Login." Click
"Check Credentials" in order to see which credentials continue to be missing.

If any of the following credentials are missing from your application, please email the documents by the end of the day, Monday, December 4 to recommendations@phoenix.uchicago.edu or fax the documents to 773-702-8599 (domestic fax) or 773-702-4704 (international fax):

Reminder: The midyear report will come out on Friday. Just log into the online application with your grades in front of you and fill out the form. Tell some jokes, give us some updates. Also make sure that you have your college counselor's information (a business card will be helpful). We'll email and I'll try to make an online tour of the midyear so that you will know what's coming.

It's "due" February 1, and the earlier we get it, the better, especially for applicants who were deferred EA. If you were deferred EA, we will not look at your application RN until we have your midyear grades. So it is to your advantage to turn them in sooner rather than later.

If your school sends a midyear report automatically, we will accept that, and you don't have to log in and complete ours.

Hey Libby, I hope the near year is going extremely well for the Chicago admissions office.

I just have a brief delimma. My school does not report midyear until the second week of February since we take finals the last week of January. I was accepted EA, and am wondering if the late midyear report will influence anything.

Moreover, is there anything I can do increase my chance at merit awards?

And by Friday I meant next Monday, the 22nd.

A late midyear report will be fine.

is it due on February 1st or March 1st? The application's website says March, but I just wanted to make sure. Thanks!

The midyear report is now open online. Just log into the online application with the username we provided in our email to all applicants we sent yesterday.

Here is a little tour to help you get started:
http://phoenix.uchicago.edu/applicationtour/midyear1.html

Heh, cool stats for last year for the U of C.

I can't say that I haven't thought of the 'what if's' if I hadn't been rejected after almost a year of waiting. Hehe.

We will NOT be accepting the Common Application this coming year. I've noticed a lot of misinformation on this board, and then realized that we never announced it. The Uncommon Application is the only application we will use for the Class of 2012.

oh.
OH!
life is good.

Do I smell an April fools joke, Libby?
