U of Delaware Engineering - Mechanical Engineering

Does any have information on the reputation of the ME program at U of Del? We went to the Decision Days information session for MEs and didn't get a lot out of it. Couldn't get hard numbers on numbers of students doing internships/co-ops, numbers of ME students with jobs 6 months out or the attrition rate...so how is the program?

Engineering at UD is one of the most rigorous majors at UD. From the rankings I have seen (USN&WR, Princeton Review etc. ) the Mechanical Engineering Program is highly rated and is among the top 60 in the country for National Research Universities. Their UD website looks very impressive to me (they have a very impressive magazine they publish), they seem to promote class cohesiveness with intense faculty involvement, and they do seem to push undergrads to become involved in Research, which should have some positive bearing on internships and jobs (but I don’t have any specific numbers I can give you). The Program does include a Senior Design capstone experience whichs looks real working-world like to me. Obviously students need to be aggressive in pursuing these things. There is a high attrition rate for Chemical Engineering (I believe close to 50%) but I don’t have any info about Mechanical Engineering. I suspect it is probably at a level you would see at most rigorous National Engineering Programs which I believe tend to average around 20-25%. But you don’t have to be a statistic if you work real hard-which you must do to succeed in any engineering major at UD. The bottom line to all this-UD has a high quality Mechanical Engineering Program. Good luck to your child in making their decision.

The problem with UD is this: they lump all engineering programs into their marketing brochures and statistics. You are right it is hard to get any real information.

And I don’t blame them because the Chemical Eng program is highly ranked, so let’s just throw all engineering programs together.

My daughter did Electrical Engineering at UofD, her boyfriend did Mechanical.

There are 2 major companies providing internships: Gore and Dupont. My daughter’s boyfriend did an internship at Gore. He graduated last year and did find a job, but not in his major. So keep that in mind.

Overall I was not impressed with the internships available at UofD for engineers outside of Chemical Engineering.
