Hi everyone. I got accepted to CSE at University of Minnesota - Twin cities and CAS at WPI. I'm major in Chemistry, and I have a dream of being a chemist and a lecturer in the future. I don't know which school is better in Chemistry. I have searched this information on usnews, and I see Chemistry in UMN is ranked 21, but I have no information about the ranking of this major in WPI.
Could you guys please tell me more about those schools (advantages and disadvantages about campus life, opportunities to study, do research...)?
Thanks for any responses!

The college you are looking at looks good, but as you said yourself, is not ranked at all. Whether you like it or not, when apply to graduate school, they look at which college you attended. A person with similar gpa/gre score/research at a top twenty university would have a large edge over someone at a lesser ranked college.

Definitely visit both campuses. Although the U of M will probably be more expensive since the other college looks like it is very nice with its financial aid, it has a ton of research money to throw around. If you like physical chemistry, inorganic, or organic chemistry, there is a ton of research going on here.

I wouldn’t expect that at all. The IPEDS data certainly do not support such a conclusion - the average net price at WPI is well over full OOS costs at UMN.

WPI would be a good choice if you want a small school environment. Otherwise, I think just about everything falls to UMN. Better reputation, more research, MSP > Worcester, less of a hard-core tech atmosphere, etc.

Yeah, the overall costs look that way, but U of M is really bad with financial aid to some people. The majority of people I know (Who are science/engineer majors) have very little or no financial aid (Scholarships, grants, etc…). A alot of private colleges, this one included, give out a lot of financial aid.

It looks like they give 97% of their students financial aid and 94% get a grant(free money) from the actual university. This is where the U of M falls terribly short. I for one have not recieved a dime from the U. If they are struggling so much, why would they vote to spend over 100 million for a new physics building and to redo the auditorium? Their solution is to raise the student’s tuition. So far it has doubled since 2000 or 2001 (Can’t remember which).

Anyway, weigh the pros and cons of both. The tuition for WPI is about 40k without grants/scholarships and the U is probably a little over half of that.
