ok I have accepted the fact that i most likely wont get into either Georgetown's School of Foreign Service or Tufts with the following stats

I am from Detroit. I applied to the schools above plus American, Loyola, and Fordham. I've already gotten into Fordham and Loyola. GU is my first choice followed by Tufts. I got deferred from GU in EA so I am a bit pessimistic. Here are my stats.

GPA: 3.6 unweighted 3.7 weighted
SATI- 1280 660 V 620 M
SAT II- Writing 700, World History 690, Spanish 780

I was born in Poland so English is my second language plus I will be the first in my family to go to college. My plans are to major in Eastern European Studies and or International Relations. I spent my junior year abroad in Spain- so i am multilangual I suppose, English, Polish, and Spanish. I think I had an awesome interview for TUfts- the guy said he hoped I would only get into U of M and Tufts. anyway more stats

Varsity Swimming 1 year
Model United Nations 3 years went to NAIMUN and this year going to NHSMUN I am the Minister of Defense- couldnt run for office because I was in Spain
School Newspaper- 3 years
School literary magazine- 3 years
Amnesty International- 3 Years
Debate- 1 Year I just started this year and qualified for Nationals and in January went to the Columbia Debate Invitational
Science Club- 2 years performed fairly well at the Science Olympiad
Quiz Bowl- 3 Years

I won the Rotary Club Youth citizen of the Month Award this year, which was nice. I have volunteered a bit at a local hospice.

So anyway I was thinking about going to U of M or GWU. U of M has a good Slavic studies programme while GWU has a good intl' relations programme. Which do you think would be better I want to study either Russian Studies or International Relations. How good is GWU for international relations in comparison with GU? Which diploma would be better U of M's or GWU's? From which school would it be easier to transfer to GU?

Hello pp000441. Sorry about the defferal from Georgetown. It's extremely competitive and I think the average SAT this year for admitted students EA was a 1450(!). I was accepted to Gtown but went to GW on scholarship last year, so I can sympathize with your disappointment. Anyways, my experience with GW has been really great. It has its negatives(the cost) but the Elliot School has been great and DC is a blast. GW's strongest program is probably in International Affairs, and even though there isn't an official ranking of IA/IR schools, I would assume from GW's reputation from employers in this field that it would be pretty highly regarded. The Elliot School also has programs in Asian, Latin American, and Middle-Eastern Studies. http://gwired.gwu.edu/adm/classroom/mjrs_elliott_frm.html

If you go to GW, I recommend that you major in International Affairs, and double major or minor in a slavic language. GW's fairly flexible about double majoring, so definetely consider this option. GW also allows students to concentrate in certain areas of the world, and I'm certain Eastern Europe is a popular choice among fellow colonials. Just browse through the course selection and you will see.

If you are in the top 10% of your graduating class, I would say you are probably in. The average SAT is about 1300, so you're very close to that.

U. of M is also really good for Int. Affairs, but I'm not familiar with their program. You have a good shot there, also. Good Luck! Your search will be over soon!

hi thank you for the advice. Do you think that I at all have a shot at GU with my intl background and such?

and could you tell me about the student body. how inteligent the students are and more importantly how interested they are in int's relations?

Um...I would say that there's a good mix of students in the program. GW is very diverse(I'm latino btw). GW is about 5% international and 30-40% minority. There's also a lot of Jews and Catholics. All regions of The US are represented. This adds to classroom discussions and makes the overall academic atmosphere more stimulating. Most of the students here are very hard-working, who are able to balance grades with extra-curriculars. Most people I know either are heavily involved in some EC or have an internship. People are very busy.

Most students are interested in IR. People work hard for internships in the field or get involved in organizations dealing with global affairs/problems. Since GW is relatively hard to get into(most people are in top 10% of hs class and have SAT in 1250-1350 range), people are generally articulate and hardworking. Students are extremely politically charged. This atmoshere in the heart of DC makes GW a world-class institution for IA. Not everyone is interested in IA(some are preppy New-England prep schoolers who only want to party), but generally people are very interested in something to do with politics/IA.

I have no idea if you will get into GU. Good Luck and I'll keep my fingers crossed for you. Remember that it's a reach for anyone and you have lots of good options. You have really good stats and should not get down on yourself for being not getting in EA.
