If it’s your dream then apply. You’ll never know and wish you did. If you don’t get in you’ll know why and if you do you’ll be thankful you did. Every application is reviewed on it’s own merits, it’s not just grades!
Have to be honest and say I really don’t think you’re going to get in. (I’d chance you at having less than a 3% chance…I’m really sorry) As the previous poster said, though, if you really need to apply to this school, just to be able to move on if need be…you should do it. Once in a while…exceptions to the rule occur. You never know. All they can say, is no.
I would definitely start working on back up plans. There are some terrific schools that will welcome a student with your stats. Apply to several. Best wishes. Let us know what happens.
I’ve decided against applying. Hopefully I’ll get it together and apply for their med school later on down the road, this definitely serves as motivation for self improvement though. Thanks for the feedback
@aspiringdropout I agree with @Seacoast. You should apply. Even though your stats aren’t good enough, you might always wonder what if. Honestly, you would have to write a perfect essay to have any shot at all (1%), but you also have to realize that Michigan is a reach for everybody now. Nobody except athletes are guaranteed admission. If no one applied to top schools (Stanford, MIT, etc) because they didn’t think they had a shot, there would be no student body. The worst they can say is no, and all you have to lose is the application fee.
Take me for example. I have a chance, no matter how slim (OOS, 31 ACT, 3.7w gpa :/) but I’m applying and hoping for acceptance, planning on a deferral b/c of my upward trend, and realizing that I’ll most likely be denied and have to transfer after a year at the joke of a school my state calls its flagship. Go for it!
Being URM cannot be used in lieu of subpar stats - you still need to meet the standards U of M sets for its applicants. However, if your situation was that you had a rocky transition from middle school to high school, and have had a clear upward trend in your grades your sophomore and junior years, that will increase your chances.
Like the UC’s, race is not considered in admission at Michigan. Your GPA, ACT, and OOS status put your admission rate at ~ 1%. If you don’t have some special ability (art, athletic, music) or are the child of a large donor I think you are wasting your money. If you do decide to apply I would apply to the Michigan college with lower than average scores, like Kinesiology.
