If you were OOS and accepted to both (take $$ out of it) where would you attend and why???

As one who has applied to both, each are great schools and are unique in their own way. Since money is not a factor, you should consider what you are exactly looking for. Example, location… University of Minnesota is located in the Twin Cities and could find endless amount of things to do and have been ranked for many things. University of Michigan is located in a vibrant college town.
Which ever school you would benifit more from is likely the best choice.

Engr in Mich is much better(except ChemE).

Are u speaking from experience or just quoting US News Rankings??

My s thinks U of Minn would not be as academically challenging also afraid of all that cold, cold weather. He did visit both…but closed his mind after visiting U Mich. For us U of Minn is 1/2 cost, 5 hours away while U of MI would be 14 hours away

Is he sure that the weather is so different from MN at MI? MI gets a lot of snow from weather traveling across Lake Michigan. Spending that kind of money would be nuts IMHO for Michigan, but YMMV.

What is YMMV?? Where do you attend or plan to attend? What we are finding is that on the CC U of Michigan site everyone thinks it is the best. On the U of Minn site everyone thinks they are the best. I guess it is just a SFP (self-fulling prophecy). Trust meas far as the OOS Michigan tuition, our s will have plenty of skin in the game. He seems to think MI attracts more and better employers. Some one told me that Kraft does not hire engineers from U of MN. Could that be really true? How about 3M a really awesome company. All a really great debate. Opinions most welcomed!!

YMMV=Your mileage may vary. I thought from your first post that you were in-state in MN. I think your son has made up his mind and is finding facts to support his position. A little research will probably prove fruitful as to what is true and what is just urban legend. There are lots of employers in the Twin Cities that hire engineers and I am sure they don’t go to Michigan to find them. Some time spend with an amortization table regarding the debt he seems willing to take on could also be instructive. D attends the U, we are out of state and it is less expensive for her to go there than instate in IL. For her interests the U was perfect. She is in honors and got instate tuition and a scholarship from the CLA. The information on the instate tuition and scholarship arrived a few weeks after the admission decision.
As to your earlier comment regarding your sons’ idea that the classes would be too easy in enginnering for him at the U, I think the IT students on my D’s floor, some of whom were admitted to Ivy League uni’s would very much beg to differ.

Thanks so much…good post for my s to read. :)
