Does anyone have experience with vocal performance at U of Oregon? My son is considering applying but we are out of state, so tuition is quite expensive. Does anyone know how generous the music school is with aid? He won’t qualify for academic merit aid.
You’re right, the school is quite expensive for OOS students, and frankly, for VP, you can do better elsewhere.
UO does offer performance based merit aid as well as work-study campus jobs.
Thanks. This is all new to me and I definitely have a lot to learn about the VP college selection and application process!
This was 4 years ago, but my D was not offered a music scholarship at U of O. She had others at private schools however. I have found that some state schools just don’t offer these, except for academic ones which you have to know to apply for. Good luck - search the schools listed in the pinned threads.
One of my daughter’s friends was given a full ride for grad school-vocal performance there.
Grad school scholarships are a lot different than those for undergrad. First, it’s a two-year program and schools are dealing with a student that is more seasoned and they usually have a good idea of the operas they have planned, so, therefore, can choose the voices that best fit what is upcoming. Grad students will often have jobs at the school as part of the funding they’re given too- my daughter had the Opera Assistantship as her’s.
If you choose to go, you’ll want to approach Karen Esquivel as a teacher. However, what the Pp said is true, it isn’t known to turn out great singers. (We actually live here in Eugene, and my kid isn’t interested in applying to the u of o)
