Hi, am looking to find out from the parents if anyone have experience with U of Pacific? Son is OOS-Int'l, applying without visiting. Good stats, needs a safety. Was going to apply to the UC's but did not eventually.

He would major in Comp Sc or Engineering. So far has applied to GT, UT, SCU, USC. 35 ACT. National Merit Commended, AP Scholar with Distinction but less than stellar GPA. He has other colleges on the list such as Rice, Vandy, WashU - they are all reaches.

My son applied and was accepted to UoP in engineering. We visited the campus (very attractive) and liked the college. The engineering program is fairly well thought of here in California, but probably unknown in the rest of the country. My son liked the idea of having a co-op experience as part of the program. I liked the idea of a 4-year graduation guarantee. They give merit aid - my son was offered a generous grant. Stockton isn’t the most appealing city, but that might not be relevant to your son.

Santa Clara has a better reputation here in NorCal, but it’s also much more difficult to get into (your son’s ACT score is terrific though).

My son probably would have been fine attending UoP, but he was also accepted at Cal Poly and is now blissfully happy in SLO.

Forbes Magazine lists Stockton at #1 on the 2009 version of its annual list of most miserable cities: “Only 15% of Stockton adults have a college degree, which is one of the lowest rates in the U.S. Unemployment is expected to hit 15% in 2010, while housing prices should keep falling back to their mid-1990s level when the median home price was $130,000.”

It’s my understanding however, that the campus is very nice. The size of the school is unusual - larger than the larger LACs and smaller than small universities.

gadad: I heard the same good things about UoP, but my D decided against applying, even though it was a very good match for her, because of the Stockton factor. She was mostly concerned about crime. I argued, in vain, that students spend 99.5% of their time on-campus, and colleges campuses tend to be a separate little world from their surroundings.

LasMa- my son goes to UOP. He does spend 99.5% of his time on campus. And as someone said it is one of the nicest looking campuses I have seen.
It fits the bill for someone looking for a midsized campus in Ca. They have a wide range of majors including a nice School of Music, the pharmacy program and the predental.

DD also goes to UOP. The listing as “miserable city” isn’t a fair reflection on UOP. The campus is beautiful, the professors seem very engaged. My D is a freshman who is already very friendly with the Dean of her department. She has had a good experience there. She does have a car on campus and does go off campus. She is careful about where she goes and when. No different than her older brother who iss in Boston. Don’t go through the fens at 3am drunk…don’t drive through parts of Stockton at the wrong time of the day.
