anyone know anything about the school's policy on deferrals?

Got 'The Letter' today - rejected!! But they offered to consider a transfer next year - must lose a lot of freshmen to the Rochester winter... I guess all the Ivy rejects ended up at UR this year?

Good luck to all of you who made it!!

FullThrottle, best of luck to you as well wherever you end up going! :)

Even though you got rejected, you still come and inform us the news! I really appreciate it!

Goodluck if you decide to transfer next year FullThrottle!

FullThrottle, MAJOR props for posting--that really takes guts. I'm sorry to hear about your rejection, but I'm sure you'll have a wonderful experience wherever you end up going next year.

There's also the transfer option, but you'll probably love where you go too much to switch out by the time comes to reapply. :) All will be well...best of luck to you!

Thanks for the support, guys.

aww... I m really sorry franticmom, i wish ur son/daughter the best of luck wherever they go and hopefully fall in love with whatever college he/she finally decides to go to. And yea this has really been an uber competitive year for all colleges nationwide! Hopefully everything will turnout fine in the end.

I got my acceptance letter about two weeks ago...I think I will be attending! It is my #2 choice (next to Clarmont Mckenna, admitted but no scholarship money). I will be visiting in about 10 days...anyone else from the west coast attending?!

hey congrats to all who made it in, and good luck to those who didn't. yeah, this year has been crazy to get into schools, and if you got accepted recently. please add ur name to the accepted list, i don't feel like doing it any more lol. yeah, i think the acceptance rate at UR is much lower this year from so many applicants this year. and yes, many have been rejected so don't feel bad if you didn't make it cause you're not alone...full throttle and franticmom's kid, wish ya luck wherever u go...there's always next year...

I think I have decided. Count me in!

i believe what is happening at rochester with admissions is really intentional. The new president made a huge emphasis on bringing up the school's name. Although URochester is an awsome school, many people havent ever heard about it outside the academia and local residents. They are trying, more than ever, to accept only the most qualified students. As far as their low yield rates, this happens because so many Ivy leaguers choose UR as a safety. Many of the Ivy rejectees do choose to come here and I think the school is will accept those students quicker than just a regular applicant (provided that his/her stats are better), perhaps to boost their name/prestige/we. There are not many studets who leave rochester their second year (around a 95% retention rate.)

I don't have any statistical data to back this up, but i think that the feeling that "this year has been crazy to get into schools" stems in large part from the students' closer than ever interaction with the college process during their senior year. Students tend to ask other students about acceptances/rejections, they discuss the college application process more than ever this year, and yes, many visit visiting colleconfidential. The CC boards might make a new applicant feel as if #1 everyone else applying has better stats, #2 getting into a good college is nearly impossible, and #3 that they are not even good enough, compared to other applicants, to apply to a certain college. Talking to my sisters, who all went to college a few years back, they've never really felt that it was VERY hard to get into a good college. It was tought to get into a good school, but it has always been that way. i don't think that the admission to tough schools has once of a suddent become even harder in just one year. But that is just my opinion. Let me know what you think (especially parents who have had older kids go through the same process)

i agree with you jersh55, UR is in the midst of some very big efforts to improve its prestige outside of the colleges and the city by becoming very selective and admitting only the most qualified students - the low yield is most likely because of most of them goign to ivies - and also because of the dreary weather. The city has also taken a hit w/ the departure of IBM and most of the white collar Xerox jobs...so that also repels many people from attending...which is unfortunate of course. UR remains a great institution though - and UR's Eastman School of Music remains at the top of all music schools of America =)

The statistics you have on hand are absolutely correct, I have the Common Data Set to prove it (from the Dept of Institutional Research @ UR): UofR has a 95% retention rate - meaning of the roughly 1000 freshman who enter, 95% of them decide to stay (meaning they were satisfied with the kind of education and social/campus atmosphere at UR).

Admissions to colleges havent changed THAT much in the past few years - but certainly within the past 10 years it has gone through some massive changes. The collegeboard SAT is awhole new thing because the SAT used to be a test taken by only the cream of the crop in the nation (only the geniuses); Now the SAT is taken by all and the standards have all shifted at all the major universities/colleges towards admitting a more diverse student body among many other new criteria.

Whether or not it's gotten more competitive - id say im not sure either but the # of people applying to college has increased tremendously and its starting to overwhelm the schools... which may explain some strange admissions decisions, especialyl since many HS now do not offer class ranking to the colleges.

its just a period of great change - who knows where it'll take us , but all i know is we're a part of some exciting times n that we should just make the best of it. Personally, I feel like its worked out for me - im ready to give college my all (i see it as a new beginning). All of this college admissions stuff is just a big big sea of mass hysteria - stop worrying so much and focus on what you really came here to do: succeed.
good luck everyone =)

Awakien, have you thought of working in the admission office next year or so? You seem to have great potential!

yeah...u should work in admissions awakien...well written even though it's just a post...anyone planning to try out for the tennis team?
