u of r medical program...?

i heard somewhere that rochester has this really prestigious medical program for undergrad? can someone elaborate perhaps? or direct me to a link?

It’s a very good pre-medical program in that a very large % of applicants get into med school, but the pre-med track is VERY difficult (then again, it’s very hard no matter where you go).

so, there is no “special” program? just the conventional 4 year pre-med?

I believe there is an 8 year bs/md, but my impression is that it’s exceedingly difficult to get into, as are most 8 year medical programs. I don’t think there’s anything other than that…

There is however the REMS program, which is very similar to something like Brown’s PLME. You get a space in the medical school from your first year in college provided you maintain certain criteria (I think). It is very competitive and only about 8 to 10 kids get in each year.

You have two option:

1) A conventional pre-med. Nothing special about this - just like anywhere else (except that UR is a good school and has strong bio/etc depts)

2) The REMS (Rochester Early Medical Scholars) program. This is a 4+4 program where you get into medschool at the same time you get into undergrad.

Typically, there are 500-750 applications every year for 50 interview spots. Out of the 50, they accept 10-15. The goal is to have no more that 10 students every year in this program.

You have to maintain a 3.5 GPA, do community service, and some other stuff during undergrad. You do not have to take the MCAT.
