I just got this invitation from U of R saying that there will be an "informational reception" in my area soon. Has anyone heard of this? Do you know exactly what they'll disscus?

are you an incoming freshman?

No, i'm a high school junior

that just means they'll have info about their school that'll 'help' you decided on where to apply next year. a lot of propaganda. but you should go if ur considering rochester at all, shows them interest, which increases ur chances

propaganda has such a negative connotation...
An informal reception is just an opportunity for you to go and meet people from the UofR to learn more about the university and perhaps to urge you to go there, thats all. Go if you're interested. As for whether or not it increases your chances - this is unlikely, the best way you can boost ur app is to apply for an interview - but it certainly helps to get to know some people there

Definitely go. I went to a reception in Chicago, and it was very detailed and helpful. Also, it is a way for you to show the admissions officers that you are interested in the school.

Tigerlilly: are you at U of R now or planning on appyling/going?

it does help your chances! I went to one and they said that they keep a record of all those kinds of functions you attend as it demonstrates interest in the school.

piggie -

I am going to be a freshman at UR in the fall (-:

i guess i must go
