U of Scranton Nursing Full

Sad news today. D1 wasn't exactly rejected from U of Scranton but received a letter saying the nursing program for Fall 2010 is full and is not considering any more applicants.

She applied in late December and the deadline for this school is March 1!

I think what hurt her were that her test scores, transcripts, and recs were sent around the same time but took much longer to "arrive" since they were sent USPS and had to be processed through campus mail. If they didn't consider her application until all of it was together, then..... it was too late.

My advice to any future nursing applicants is to send all the "slow" stuff as early as possible if the school is a probable choice for you. Better safe than sorry. And of course, apply early too!

Scranton has a very small program. We were told that they only have about 60 nursing students per class (around 240 total).

That was one of the things D liked about it.

Did your daughter apply to CU? I visited and it has some interesting relationships with hospitals in our area. How about SLU? Notified today that I received a real nice scholarship, mostly because of my work at NCI/NIH but really making me think about them.

She didn’t apply to either of those schools. Congrats on your scholarship! I’ve heard good things about SLU and nursing. I went to WUSTL many years ago, and enjoyed my time in St. Louis very much.

D has been accepted at Elmira and Birmingham-Southern (which has a 3/2 program with Vandy). Still waiting to hear from a few others.

D and H visited Scranton last week. They both really liked it!

It is now in the top two!! Lots of good things about the school and nursing program!

Very nice hotel (walking distance to campus) to stay at when parents visit. (old train station). The town has two malls, an off Broadway theater, movie theaters, a music pavillion, restaurants, and a ski area and hiking trails that are 5 minutes away. Also has some interesting museums and cultural activities. It has more to offer than a lot of campus locations. In addition, there are 3 hospitals within walking distance of campus. (Mercy Hospital and 2 others.)

There are a lot of cool things about Scranton. (We were surprised.)
D told me it has the nation’s 4th largest St. Patrick’s Day parade. Who knew?

Ah, you stayed at the Radisson! I wanted to stay there for D’s graduation, but they were full before I realized I needed to make reservations. How did you like it?

And yes, they are gearing up for parade day. It is a really major event. Thank goodness spring break follows so they can recover!

As I have said to many posters here, Scranton is a great school with a great community environment. We have walked downtown many times and enjoy it. We have found the people in the businesses to be very friendly. The city hosts an Italian festival every Labor day weekend down by the federal courthouse. There is entertainment and tons of different food vendors.

Having just looked at the BusinessWeek article,i must say it is very bad…In NJ, it picks Edison, with runnersup of Bloomfield and New Brunswick,…yechhh

In Pa, it has Scranton, with runnersup of Allentown and Erie, double yech…

I wonder if the parameters were old small cities whose best days were decades ago…

Scranton seems to have gone through a revitalization. We think it has charm and interesting history.

D and H loved the hotel. I wasn’t able to go,but we have booked it again for Preview Day (March 27) so I get to go!

The St Patricks parade is huge and the “festivities” begin in the morning. Students are usually napping by late afternoon in anticipation of the continued party.
