Hi everyone I got into U of T today with a 4.2 ish GPA weighted 3.7 unweighted and a 1510 sat score. They don’t take extra curricular so I won’t talk about that. I am a Canadian Citizen living in the united states. To be honest I kind of applied without a lot of intent to go here, but seeing as it’s a great school I thought I should check it out.
I got admitted to the college of computer science at University College.
I just have some general questions about the school: what are the job prospects for computer science, how’s the study life balance, and do students generally enjoy the university.
Thanks!
You have been admitted to the computer science stream. You have not been admitted to the computer science major. To be admitted to the computer science major, you will have to meet a certain standard, which changes ever year, with your first year grades. http://web.cs.toronto.edu/program/ugrad/admission.htm Job prospects for computer science graduates are excellent.
Canadian universities, like U of T, will not hold your hand. It is up to you to do the best you can. For many students, especially computer science/engineering/pre-med students, that means study/life balance goes out the window. I graduated from U of T and my son is a current student. We both had/are having a great time with good study/life balance. My time at U of T was the best of my life.
So are the percentages given number of students retained? Would you say it’s hard to fight for a spot, or will most top students be able to get into their major.
Another question I have is regarding class sizes. Are they all huge lecture hall style classes, or do they break down into smaller ones sometimes. I’ve heard that it’s hard to get a high GPA at U of T which will make it hard to get a job in the States sometimes. Does U of T have a solid name recognition here too.
It seems like an amazing school, and I’m glad I got in. I’ll definitely be looking to visit soon.
omg congrats! You are so lucky. If you don’t mind me asking, do you mind posting your courses/grades for grades 11 and 12? I applied for engineering and i am also a canadian living in america and I’m so anxious lol @Derek17
@Derek17 No, those are not the percentage of students of students allowed to continue with the major. Those are the percent grades required to advance to the major (or specialist). This quote from the link might explain it better -
So, to be accepted to the major or specialist last year, a student in the computer science admission stream (that’s you) would have had to get an average of at least 80% in CSC148 and CSC 165 which are the typical first year computer science courses. Now, that doesn’t sound bad until you learn that the class average for a course at U of T is usually 75% or lower. (My son took both those courses last year and I believe the average for CSC 165 was about 78%, but still) So, over 50% of the students admitted under computer science will not actually get to major in computer science, unless they continue to take CSC 207 or 236 or 240 in hopes of boosting their grades.
Looking at current CS class sizes, even the intro classes are under 200 students. Fourth year classes are around 25-75.
U of T has a solid name recognition in the US.
cool thanks. Sounds like a bit of a risk going into comp sci there. @harrypotter111 I had straight As or -A’s pretty much with the exception of french (B). I had 5s in pretty much every except for comp sci which i got a 4 in. By no means tho am I some weird genius I have to work really hard to maintain this stuff.
