U of Toronto

Anybody know anything about this school?

Any questions about it in particular? I'm thinking of doing grad studies there and have researched about it a little.

exactly what do you want to know. I can answer almost any question about it.

a few notes:

It has the best academic reputation in Canada. Considered the top school here. Largest endowment by far. most Nobel Laureates ( tied with Mcgill) most Rhode scholars.

large student body but there are two suburban campuses so don't be imitimdated by the numbers. the suburban campuses take almost 20,000 students away from the population numbers.

first year classes in popular subjects are large, but that's a fact at most large Canadian schools. It's really not a problem though.

beautuful campus in the middle of Toronto.

university system is similar to Oxbridge, so there is a different colleges on the main campus. so it will feel like you are part of a community.

ive applied to uft ms for fall 2005 wht abt u guys?
and if u were accepted at mcgill and uft which one wud u chose, career is accountancy..

for business related subjects like accounting.
I would go with U of T, especially at the grad level.

I have been accepted to Chicago ea, Western and U of T. Is it a good idea to go to the canadian schools or the american ones. I heard Chicago has low grades. Is this true? Additionally does U of T or Western have low grades?

if you can handle the academic rigor of Uof T then go. Remember they have a sink or swim attitude there. It's VERY hard and there is no grad inflation. Perhaps grade deflation if there is such a thing. maybe we should start using that term for schools that seem not give out A's at all. what is your program? that is usually what the deciding factor is? plus, location?money? are you going to grad school? make a pro and con list.

So U of T is a good school? Is it comparable to a good american school?

Do Canadian schools offer any financial aid to American students?

DavidLandes - I guess it depends on which program you got accepted in to to consider UofT a good school. For engineering & sciences it's world class... I did a search on Berkeley's website and found someone who got a mere 3.42 GPA from UofT then went on to do a PHd at Berkeley. I don't like posting names but if you search for "Toronto university" on their site it's on page 11.

Also it seems some top-ranked graduate from Harvard chose to attend Trinity college at UofT for a masters and won a rhode scholarship to Oxford this year... I believe Trinity college alone puts in 2? rhode scholars each year. Again I dont like mentioning names without permission, but if you go to UofT's site, click more headlines then search for "rhode scholarship trinity" you'll find it on the first page.

Also found this interesting since I'm in to math:
http://www.nctm.org/news/articles/2004_10nb_olympiad.htm
It's the International mathematical olympiad... out of those 12? worldwide winners you see in the picture, 2 of them started attending UofT last year including one who scored perfect in that contest and got first place in Canada (and the world).

I'm not sure about UofT undergrad since I'm mostly researching in to their grad school, but I have seen many people from UofT going to top US schools after a masters and they curve on a B+ in grad...

Yes. I got into Columbia grad with a less than stellar undergrad GPA. Most U.S schools see a C+ undergradate mark at U of T to be the equivalent of an A- at top U.S. schools.
