My junior S and I are visiting U Tulsa next week. He will almost certainly be NMF next year. Interested in Tulsa's Presidential Scholarship, but understand that it is competitive.

Those NMFs(or parents) who applied in recent years, can you post if you did or did not receive Pres., and if not, did you receive some smaller scholarship- how much? If you could include any other helpful info, like how many campus visits and when, any other contacts you made. In or out of state and if OOS, far away? GPA/test scores. Did you name them first choice early? Did you take the award or go elsewhere? If you'd rather PM than post, that's good too. Trying to assess S's chances and what he might expect if he doesn't get Pres. I'll ask admissions counselor, but not sure how specific of info she'll tell. I know other students not NMFs get this award also, but mostly interested in what it takes for NMF to get it.

I've read through the threads on TU forum that discuss this, and my general sense is that kids who don't receive Pres. get full tuition instead. Trying to gauge if that is accurate. In particular, would like to hear if someone received less than that, as one past poster made reference to possibility of getting 1/2 tuition, though didn't claim to know this directly.

Thanks much, anyone who takes the time to answer.

Last year, you had to have Tulsa as your First Choice for the very earliest pool (March 1st I think) to be eligible for the Presidential Scholarship which also involved an additional application. My feeling (but I don’t remember where I got this) is that demonstrated interest is very important for this award. I do know NMF in previous years that did not get the Presidential and got full tuition instead.

I know of 3 kids from here attending, all NMF. All of the students and their parents think it is a great school. One former mechanical engineering is now doing quite well as a graduate student at Cornell.

The campus is beautiful but D decided it was too small for her and there isn’t hardly anything around the campus.

Also just remembered a son of a colleague goes there. He received an offer to do research in the chemistry department with a professor the summer before even starting as a freshman. His dad also has nothing but praise for the school.

My son is at TU. (Loves it, BTW.) He is not a NMS and got just shy of half tuition. I’m sure they do better for NMS who don’t get the Presidential Scholarship. I’ve always heard they give full tuition to those NM kids who don’t get it.

I’ve posted this on a few threads before. S (hs class of 2012) was NMF who applied and did not get TU Presidential scholarship. He had good, but not perfect scores (2200) He had good grades, about 4.3W, 3.85UW, excellent (most challenging) transcript from highly- respected district. OOS (but neighboring state). Essay was probably good. Had weak ECs and poor interview, did not show serious interest in the school, but he did visit for one of their events. He wasn’t the “leadership” type of kid they look for. And not really a surprise that he wasn’t picked. An excellent student, but not tippy-top perfect. He was offered full-tuition. (No need-based aid). While this was an excellent offer, S took the NMF near-full-ride at UTDallas. He did name TU as first choice, and then changed his choice as soon as he found out he didn’t get the Presidential. Hope this helps. In his year, about 1/3 of Presidential applicants were chosen for the scholarship. I was never told that the “losers” all got full tuition, but that would be my guess. I think NMFs can expect a very generous offer.

Thanks everyone! It figures it’s been sunny 80 degrees there every day, but the day we are visiting predicted to be cloudy, windy, 45. Is your son happy at UTD, atomom? Now got feedback from our assigned ad com, She says that in the past, often all NMF who did not get the Pres were offered full tuition. But last year they got something less, ‘near full tuition’, she said, though didn’t give an amount. She says it depends on how much money they have for scholarships… My guess is since they also offer the scholarship to high-stats non-NMF, they are trying to see how many top kids they can bring in with somewhat smaller scholarship, spreading the money around, or just giving less. Like NEU is doing, and some other schools.

@STEMFamily, actually it’s snowing in OK right now. LOL! OKC has snow and there is a band just north of Tulsa, too. We have crazy weather here in the spring. It was 81 on Friday.

celeste: S is doing great at UTD. (Younger son, also NMF, is taking the UTD scholarship, too. He didn’t even bother applying anywhere else. Totally simplified the process this time around. . .)
