U of Vermont vs. U of New Hampshire

I was accepted to a bunch of schools but have it pretty much narrowed down between UVM and UNH. I like the fact that they are both moderately sized so they offer the advantages of a big school without feeling overwhelming. I know UVM may be slightly better academically, especially since i am probably going to major in something environmentally related. I am also considering a political science major or minor. UVM also seems to have more to do in the surrounding area, and Burlington seems like a pretty cool town, but i feel like i might fit in better with the UNH student body (I am pretty laid-back but i am not really the eccentric/hippy/stoner/partier type that seems to be common at UVM). I am out-of-state (Massachusetts) so they cost about the same, but UVM is three and a half hours away while UNH is only an hour and a half. I am pretty close to my family so being far away might be a problem. UNH also is a lot closer to Boston (only an hour away by train), which is nice. I visited both schools a few times and I liked the professors at UVM better but the students seemed happier and more friendly at UNH. I liked UNH's campus better and i liked the way it was spread out because it made it feel a lot smaller than it is. I thought UVM's surroundings were really nice, but it might be too cold for me up there (i know the winters are pretty cold at UNH too). Any thoughts? thank you

You probably saw less than 1% of each at either school, so the impressions you got about these factors aren’t necessarily valid. I wouldn’t consider them in the decision, if I was you. FWIW, Princeton Review’s surveys show UVM student considerably more satisfied at their school.

Depends if you like smoking weed/hippie then UVM. If your a beer drinker/partier UNH

I am neither of those things. I figure wherever i go i can participate or avoid the party scene as much as i want to. Unless the drinking/weed cultures at these schools are too prevalent to avoid. Any other thoughts?

Hello, in my opinion UVM would be a better choice. I believe it is a slightly bigger school and it is located in a much better area. Burlington is such an awesome city- Church Street is beautiful and the down town water center is extremely nice as well. Also in the winter I know Smugglers Notch is about 40mins away and Jay peak maybe about an hour so if your into skiing or snowboarding you’d enjoy that. Also, for what you want to study- something environmentally related, i think you will be able to find a lot of other students that have the same interests. I do not know too much about UNH, although i have visited there once and I wasn’t too impressed. Overall, I would say go where you feel you would be happiest. Good luck!

UNH= University of No Hardware

UVM=better hockey

Choice is clear
