U of Washington

I know its a little vague, but I need as much info on it. Nothing in particular just yet, opinions, facts, about academics, athletics, just life there in general. :)

its big
the cherry trees are pretty
football team is decent ( ok I really don't know)
did I mention its big?
Seattle isn't as hot as Portland

Been hearing it's a very underrated, very attractive school, guy at my high school who was offered a track scholarship to Stanford turn it down upon visiting UW, said he loves it, big big party scene at the Seattle UW house block, big frat activities going on, weather is bearable, it does rain four days a week, but honestly it's usually in the early morning and by the early afternoon the weather clears up and it's alright. Life is pretty laid back, but academics are pretty decent, it's a West Coast university so that is kind of expected. Haven't heard anything bad about it, all positive. :)

Seattle is a nice town but feels a little too whitebread coming from California. UW is a decent school, on par with say UC Irvine or USC. It could be a good option if you want to go to college elsewhere but want to stay close enough to jet home in 2 hours.

PS: Their football team sucks. ;)

Haha thanks. I dont care much for the football team really. I really like Seattle in general. I am from LA and the idea of getting out of state sounds very appealing to me. :) Washington's one of my favorite states, I'm not a big fan of CA, though I was raised her. It's too sunny, and all too familiar in a way.

The most important thing from it for me, is academics, and just the aura around it. Is it known for being a somewhat of a party school? =/

How is it's Med. school? Im concidering the option of heading to WSU for a bachelors, and then going to Udub for medical school. Any thoughts on that? I honestly don't know TOO much about either of these two schools, but I'm interested in them, from what I've heard from people. I'm just trying to get a little more opinions. Thanks you guys!

UW has one of the best med schools in the country...i think like 5 or so...

Actually the University of Washington school of medicine has been ranked number 1 for primary care for the last 13 years or something. But it is almost impossible to get into unless you are a resident of Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana, or Idaho.

Well, if I would apply after attending another U or college in Wash., wouldn't I count as a resident?

Right, the UDub medical school serves the five states. That's why it's primary care is so good. It's also ranked #7 in research.

Josh is correct. The excellent U of Washington Medical School has a compact with the other northwestern states to serve as the medical school for the region. Thus, nearly all the admittees are citizens (i.e. domiciled) of those states.

A bachelor's from UW is no guarantee of admission to UW-Medical School. Nevertheless, the UW undergraduate program is generally quite good in many departments, including the sciences. As for the look of the place, you'll either love or hate the campus aethetics; modern brick. (see my posts on other threads). Active (the neighbors say OVERLY active) fraternity scene. The campus is quite social with Husky Football, the former #1 team in the nation and frequent Rose Bowl winners. Interesting diversity with a large number of Asian American students. Fabulous student recreation/athletic center. Parts of the campus are situated on the lake. Wealthy neighborhoods and upscale shopping mall next door.

Also, you are wise to check out Washington State University in Pullman. Remote location but excellent science programs. Well regarded Honors College. Many WSU alumni are admitted to UW Med School and the WSU Vet school. Probably the most traditional/residential campus in the west. Much better weather than Seattle and western Washington region. By the way, Oregon Health Sciences Univerity (medical school) in Portland is much more open to non-resident applicants.
