U of WI Madison
U of IL Urbana
U of IO Iowa City
Illinois State University Normal

I am thinking that is the order I should consider them. I am going for a Biochem or Microbiology major.
The difference between IL and WI is about $20,000!!!! ( I think) as I am IL resident.

Actually, in the great scheme of things, isn't the price differential more like $80,000 (over 4 years)?

There may be a prestige factor differential -- but is it all that much? All students tend to put down and disparage their own state university in favor of the one next door.

And, Champaign-Urbana being downstate, and Madison being relatively closer to Chitown -- I have been to both campuses (although not recently) and I can see why Madision is calling to you!

As a parent, I feel that there's not enough difference in the schools to justify the additional expense. You need to investigate for yourself though -- my suggestion is to set up appointments with professors in the BioChem and Microbiology departments at both schools, and try to spend a good deal of time on campus. I think you'll find a connection one place or another and that will give you better basis to make a decision.

Even as a UW supporter, I'd be hardpressed to justify the extra cost over UI instate. UI is generally strong in the sciences and I don't see that much advantage to UW except for the fringe benefits.

U of I is definitely better for maths and scienes, especially engineering and biology scienes. Plus you'd be paying 1/3 the cost at U of I. Not to mention the campus is more traditional and nicer.

u of i's campus is a lot nicer...madison seems dirty to me, especially because its in a city and the main street there with all their shops just isn't very nice...

I have been thinking about UW or UIUC for business. For some reason, there is something about UW that I like, even thou UIUC has better accounting and is cheaper.

I have a sister at U of I in microbiology and biochem. She has had nothing but positives to say about it. It's a top rate educator in the sciences and many of the oppurtunities she has to work directly with pioneering researchers in the field have been incrediable. Iowa city is also a preety nice place.

i thought he meant 20k overall, no? if it is 80k... i say go to the cheaper alternative. dont be burdened by debt even before u step into the corporate world man.
