U Pitt Financial Aid 2nd review?

Hi! I was accepted into both the University of Pittsburgh nursing school and SUNY Binghamton’s Decker school of nursing. Pitt is my first choice - it’s a dream school and program - but it would cost my parents 28K instead of 21K like at Bing.
My stats are 3.7 GPA and 1430/2190 SAT.
I did receive a merit scholarship from pitt, for $5,000 a year.
My question is, is it worth it to ask Pitt for a second review? Our EFC was $6,000, so 28K is insane. I know pitt is very number based, but is there a chance they would give us any more money? (Also, could they take any away after a second review??? :frowning: )

Thank you!!!

Did you fill out the FAFSA and update with 2015 tax information? Were you offered any financial aid other than loans like work study or state grant (I assume you are instate for Pitt)?

I am out of state, I filled out the FAFSA with all the updated info, i got merit for 5K, need-based for 7500, work-study for 2k, and then a bunch of loans. @mommdc

Since you’re OOS and it’s public, they probably aren’t going to try very hard to match your EFC.
Are you going to be able to afford Bing, since it’s still 15k above you’re EFC?

Oh I see. I assumed you were in state because of the $28k number, $21 k instate tuition, $12k fees and room and board = $33k - $5,000 merit = $28k

Pitt actually did give you need based aid, pretty generous for EFC $6,000 but as a public OOS school they are not going to be able to meet your need.

As an OOS student your cost is actually going to be higher than $28 k.

$35,662 OOS nursing school tuition
$12,000 approx fees and room and board
$47,662

-12,500 (merit and need based grant)

= $35,162

Take another look at Bing if it’s instate for you. Or do you have other more affordable choices for nursing?

It turns out to be 28K because of loans (5K) and money that I have saved up from working (2K) @mommdc . Thank you guys! But I’m thinking I’ll have to go to Bing, since it’s in-state and much cheaper. Maybe I’ll go to Pitt for grad school. Do either of you know how good Decker nursing is? @usualhopeful @mommdc

No sorry, I’m not familiar with Bing or nursing schools in general. But how many nurses in the program pass their exams?

Did you apply anywhere else? It doesn’t sound like Bing is affordable either. How will your parents pay for Bing?

Did you apply to any financial safeties

Decker is very good, but 21K for a family with 6K EFC doesn’t sound doable… ::frowning:

Hi everyone!

I just wanted to ask if anyone knew a recent NCLEX pass rate for Decker SON students.
On Binghamton’s website they say their students pass well above the state and national rate, but does anyone know exactly how many passed in 2015/2014?

I really love Binghamton, but I’m just a tiny bit worried because in the earlier 2010’s Decker’s pass rate was in the 70’s, and I want to know if Decker will prepare me for the NCLEX, and really how good the school is. If anyone has any information about how good Decker is, please let me know!

Also, if I decide to go to medical school, do Bing students get accepted into good medical schools?

I just can’t seem to find all of this information anywhere, any help would be HUGELY appreciated!!

Thank you!!!

If you want to be premed, then the classes are different. Nursing has the “easier” science requirements.

All med schools are excellent. So when Bing students are accepted to med schools, then they are accepted to “good med schools”. We dont’ have any “so so” med schools in the US.

And of course Bing students get into med schools.

You are instate to Bing. what aid did you get from Bing? any merit?

You applied to some reaches, but did you apply to any other matches or safeties?

Since you’re instate, why is Bing costing $21k per year? Didn’t you qualify for TAP or any other merit? You have a high SAT.

How will your parents pay $20k+ per year when their EFC is so low? Are you expecting them to take out loans? How could they afford to pay them back?

Are you thinking that YOU will pay back $80k+ in loans? If so, that’s crazy.

It may not be too late to apply to other schools with good nursing that would give you a lower net cost.

Any CUNYs?

^true: is the 21K bill before TAP?

Did you apply to any of these schools or tried net price calculator to see what aid you might get?

If you qualify for a state grant it would be better to stay instate, tuition is also much less for instate students versus OOS at public schools.

I know that UAH (which has excellent nursing) would STILL give you AT LEAST free tuition if you applied now for next fall. I suspect that you’d get even more.

UAB, which also has fabulous nursing, would also give at least free tuition. UAB and UAH really want more OOS high stats students so are known to throw in add’l merit awards to put towards housing, etc.

Both have very high pass rates on the nat’l exam.

Both schools are part of the excellent UAB healthcare system.

Hi everyone, I’m a senior so it’s too late to apply to other schools for this fall.
My parents CAN afford the Binghamton tuition, even though FAFSA calculated our EFC to be 6K. We will not have to take any loans out (neither me nor them). Thanks for all the advice and concern, though!
I am in-state, and the 21K is after the TAP grant and SUNY tuition credit. I didn’t receive any merit aid.
@mom2collegekids thanks for the Bing advice! I’ve also spoken to Decker reps about my questions. I was accepted to other matches and safeties that cost the same amount as Binghamton.
Committed to Bing last night

For other prospective nursing students (especially high stat students who would qualify for scholarships) that parents do not have the money for the gap with EFC- really have to be aware during HS junior year so as to not miss deadlines and opportunities.

For OP - if wanting to consider med school after BSN, be sure to follow the higher level CH/Biology/Physiology/etc courses with a pre-professional adviser at your college. Just make sure to keep the GPA etc so you can continue with BSN program. Some programs have you interview and review GPA etc before being admitted for junior year nursing classes.

Some students may find it a real task to juggle work study or other work along with the academic requirements.

Good luck from a BSN and who has a DD about to finish BSN.

The schools @mom2collegekids mentioned are still accepting applications she said.
