U.S. Senate Page

thanks prankityclankity!

Hardworker-
I was selected as a Senate Page for the upcoming semester, and while I can’t offer experience, I was quite persistent in the application process. I can’t be completely unbiased in the issue, because my family has been involved in Montana politics for many years. However, we are nowhere in the ranks of many people or have very high ‘connections.’ Whether or not it helped me, I will never know.

Nonetheless, every state and every Senator’s office has a different application process. Mine included an application to fill out, and five short response questions. About four months following my application, I was granted an interview in April of sophomore (last) year. It’s a long process, I applied for second semester this year, starting January 29th, however, I submitted my application freshman year (2009). After the interview, I was ‘recommended’ to do some time volunteering as an intern in the Senator’s office I was applying through. In all honesty, the experience of working in the Senators field office in MT was incredible. I met four sitting Senators and two US Cabinet members, all in my home city. I would recommend an internship (2-4 hours per week) to raise your chances.

I didn’t receive word that I had been chosen until December 7th of 2010 for a semester that begins January 29th. Like many political things, a lot happens to rely on chance. Only 30 pages are selected for the Senate per semester, this number is always the same and never fluctuates. Sixteen seats are reserved for the majority party (presently, the Democrats, and fourteen for the minority. Like it has been said before, senior Senators are offered page slots first, so applicants must hope they live in a state with a senior Senator. However, I know a girl appointed by our first-term Senator, so the unexpected happens. Also, the number of boys and girls varies. A senator is only allowed EITHER a boy OR a girl, so the applicant must hope they are of the selected gender.

In general, the application process is a long road, but by no means get discouraged. This is an incredible opportunity worth fighting for! Good luck with your application, any questions just post on this thread. (I don’t know what “PMing” is.)

I guess this doesn’t apply to you anymore. But for anyone interested in applying, read up!

I read through it, and my question wasn’t answered, academically how are the summer sessions? I will have completed AP Calculus BC, AP Physics, Poly sci, US History and other’s by then, and while that’s not primary reason for attending it is a critical factor for me. I want to make sure I will at least be occupied, and before I even ask about the academics, do we attend school or what? I’d apply for the regular session except I am transferring high schools and dont want to transfer again, midway of my transferring!!

Give up on Illinois. Especially for Kirk. I actually just secured his spot today believe it or not.

shushugah - there are no academics in the summer term - is that what you are asking about? as far as being ‘occupied’ - it’s a full time+ job

oh alrighty, :slight_smile: though aren’t there less sessions in the summer?

shushugah - i’m not as familar with the summer sessions, but i can say for sure that the program keeps the pages busy w/ very limited free time. i think the summer sessions are scheduled to run only when the senate is in session…not when the senate is on summer break.

I’m going to be a senate page this summer! so excited!

And the application process was a bit weird for me too. I called my Senior Senator’s office back in november about it and got into a correspondence with a woman there who had coincidentally gone to my school. After I contacted them, they applied for a page slot and in April, the woman emailed me to tell me that they had gotten the slot and were therefore open for applications. Before I had contacted them they had barely heard about the program, (I’m apparently the first senate page from Delaware!) Anyway, it paid to be persistent in this case I guess.

Anyone else gonna be a senate page for the 2011 second summer session?!

hey i really want to get into this Congress page program but im stuck because i cant find out exactly how to get a Congress member to sponsor me? how do i do that?

@futurepage125 contact your senator’s office.
