I agree, but that's what they told me at the information desk at the bottom of Newcomb Hall. They were laughing as they told me about the place, one could tell they weren't buying it either. Whatever........I'm sure I'll hear a dozen different stories once I get there. Nonetheless, it is a very pretty place, and very striking.

That story used is common, but not true. The most creative version was that the man who was behind Dr. Seuss lived there.

There has been a discussion of Charlottesville and Chapel Hill before. In my opinion, Charlottesville wins for its music and art scenes. It is far superior in that respect.

I'm from Carolina and CH has quite an allure. However, imo, CVL surpasses CH in terms of beauty: the mountains, the history, the way they still talk about Jefferson (like he's in the next room). These things make me thank my lucky stars for having this opportunity. IMO it is the most beautiful University in the entire country. I had some great options too (Duke, Cornell, CH,ND to name just a few), but kept coming back to "Mr. Jefferson's grounds". I'm a bit of a romantic though, and I am thrilled with the idea of moving from my home state to VA where I will be able to experience snow, mountain air, and the Virginia hunt country.
I haven't experienced the arts and music scene yet. I arrive on Aug. 25th.
Man, I thought long and hard about CH>>>it's a great school too. For me, it was too predictable with all my friends going there, and too close to home.
UVA is still southern, top ranked, and an adventure for me.
Bottom line>>I don't think that one can go wrong with either of these fine institutions.
What made you inquire GetOOBuffalo?? Just curious??

I'm going to UNC next year, but I did get into UVA and was in my top 5 for awhile, but I never got the chance to visit. Just was wondering what the difference was since I have seen CH firsthand, but not C-ville.

G.O.Buffalo,
You know, everyone loves Chapel Hill too. It's a shame you never visited UVA. Someday, I hope you'll come up to see the grounds first hand. I think the architecture at CH is a little more random and hodge podge. Still beautiful though, and I love the way the university adjoins Franklin Street.
By NC law, many of the students are from Carolina. UVA admits more OOS kids than CH and I'm looking forward to that aspect of CVL. The architecture at UVA is stunning with Jefferson motifs everywhere. There's a lot of red brick, ornate columns, colonnades, and archways. It makes the place a kind of surreal. From the Rotunda, one can cross the street to get to "the Corner". It's an area of restaurants, stores and such that appears to be hopping with activity and fun. Of course UVA has it's more modern block like structures too, that are not attractive in the least but, at least they are far away from the true historical section.
This past May 1st we all had to decide on going somewhere! You'll love Chapel Hill and the state of North Carolina.
