UA Campus Tour tips .... <3

Good, it looks like you saw a nice bit of Tuscaloosa. Did you look around downtown?

Not sure exactly where downtown is. I did head down Hackberry heading away from campus and saw the area we came in from on Capstone Day, past the Jack’s, where Bama Lanes and Papa Johns and Bottom Feeders is, over the railroad tracks. Saw Full Moon BarBQ on McFarland when we came in.

What do you consider downtown Tuscaloosa?

I meant to get a street map at a gas station and totally forgot. This weekend was more focused on getting to explore the campus and immediate surroundings.

Hoping to do more exploring when come back for Bama Bound, if not before.

Downtown is west of campus. If you were to continue on University and pass the Strip, and then pass Queen City Ave, you’ll head into “Downtown.” It’s where Mellow Mushroom, Cafe Venice, and DePalma’s are.

Zoom in, click satellite and labels. Look west (left) of the stadium.

I’m really glad you enjoyed your trip. You really did see a lot of Tuscaloosa (Downtown and Northport can be seen after Bama Bound or before move-in day). Being used to large airports, the smaller size of the Birmingham Airport is very nice. Note for those flying Continental, American, or US Airways, those flights are in a different (smaller) terminal with only a newsstand and a bar/grab and go place behind security. The good thing is that security lines are very short, so you can hang out outside security where there is more stuff to do (and comfier chairs).

No need to worry about getting every nook and cranny of Tuscaloosa in yet, but I’ve learned most of out-of-towners don’t have a good knowledge of how to get around town without using McFarland, 15th St, and 359. Those streets can get extremely congested, and if you don’t know to get to different points in the city on the secondary roads, you’ll spend of a lot of your four years here stuck in traffic.

On homegame weekends, alternate routes are definitely needed.
