Interesting contrast going on here in my neck of the woods today. With the Lane Kiffin announcement last night that he was leaving UT to go to USC, the kids in DDs school who are UT-K bound were really upset. And I can’t blame them. Meanwhile, the kids who are planning on UA are over the moon about the National Championship. There was a lot of cross applying due to both campuses being equidistant from our area; I’m wondering if the events of the past two weeks will push any of them to UA. Guess I’ll hear the scuttlebutt when I see her after school today; apparently FB was exploding last night!

^RobD

Well honestly I don’t hope football causes a kid to choose one school over another cuz there’s way more important things than that, but knowing kids around here ;)

But anyways, a few of my friends up at UTK told me that there was pretty much a riot on campus last night, at least kind of.

[YouTube - Riot at UT after Lane Kiffin news](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_zKkcfq3gec)
They’re running to block Lane Kiffin in on campus I believe.

@ABR1190: there’s a lot of kids in the top 20% of DDs class who are eligible for honors programs at UT, UGA, UA, etc. & they’ve applied to more than 1 (my DD included.) Since our area has so many transplants, a lot of the kids don’t bleed orange here so their loyalties are fickle. If everything else is even, and you’re a big college football fan, then I wouldn’t be surprised if it could end up being one of those intangibles that helps tip the cart in UAs favor.

Updated info from an email that my DD just forwarded to me:
The itinerary for Capstone Scholars Day has been slightly amended to accommodate those who wish to attend the National Championship celebration in the stadium. Bus transportation has been organized to aid you in navigating campus immediately before and directly following this special commemorative event.
Yay!

Oh, good, but I’m wondering when they are going to let attendees go the celebration. I have a feeling that the stadium will fill up a couple of hours before the scheduled event even starts!

Anyway, about the new dining facilities. I went to the business school’s mini-campus and searched all over. There is no Subway there, not even in the Bidgood Bistro. Space has been cleared for something to be built between Bidgood and Alston, however. So that may the future location of the Subway.

I then hopped across the Quad to Lloyd and SEA_tide is correct, the dining hall is still under construction. Incidentally, this was the first time I had gone inside Lloyd in years. I was astounded and pleased at the job the university has done in renovating the building. It is crisp and modern in there - never would one be able to guess that this was the decrepit, absestos-ridden, chemical-seeping craphole I took my freshmen chemistry classes and labs in!

All the restaurants on campus operated by Aramark like Subway, Burger King, and Chik-fil-A are not true franchises of their respective chains but specialty stores that are licensed to sell select goods from franchises by Bama Dining. That’s why they don’t sell everything you can find at a regular Chik-fil-A at the one in the Ferg, for example.

Here’s the link to the agenda for CSD: http://csd.ua.edu/csd_agenda_2010.pdf

I don’t think Lane Kiffin will last long at USC…USC likes a different type of coach…not one who is a loose cannon.

CSDay agenda has been tweaked a bit.

Those who have made arrangements with Jami and Honors should call her to find out if timing has been changed.

Can we find out how the Capstone schedule has been tweaked? We haven’t received an email. I downloaded Rob’s link and there’s nothing on there about the stadium event.

I do like that the kids will have lunch at the Ferguson Ballroom, which I assume is in the Ferguson Center, so that they’ll be able to see that building.

It also describes a tour of the college of their choice. So if son is going to be an engineering major, will he be able to tour the Science and Engineering Complex?

I do not see where the students will have a tour of the campus. I see where the parents will have a tour, and husband was happy to see they were on buses. But I don’t see where students get a campus tour. I got a call back from honors earlier this week telling me that there would not be special tours given, as all tour guides would be involved in the events and they couldn’t spare any tour guides to do special tours.

We’ll try to take son to highlights from our tour the following day, Sunday, before we leave, but it would be nice for him to get a guided tour.

Correct, students will not be given a campus tour like the parents will be given. Needless to say the Championship Bash came up on us (UA) quite suddenly and we are doing our best to accommodate all visitors, including the thousands we weren’t expecting until a couple of days ago. Your son will be touring the his major’s college, which would be all the engineering buildings. Since UA tour guides are officially Dr. Witt’s helpers, they will be playing a big part in the ceremonies.

Feeno, that makes a lot more sense. When I do eat at that type of places, I order from the value menu which is the first thing to go in such type of business situation. On the good side, maybe Aramark can open Chik-fil-A on Sundays. I’m willing to bet that there is a market for that, and it’s not just people affiliated with the campus.

Sea_Tide…

The honors college has been arranging for some students to be given campus tours after the CSDay event.

Those that were interested, made the request to the honors college, thru Jami Gates.

Montegut quote: We haven’t received an email. I downloaded Rob’s link and there’s nothing on there about the stadium event.

Yes there is…look at the bottom of the link…

The University of Alabama will celebrate the Crimson Tide’s 2009 National Championship at 2 p.m. in Bryant-Denny Stadium, and it will last approximately one hour.

Thanks, Mom. For some reason, I don’t have that. So, the event is at 2, so we can do a tour during the football event?

I emailed Ms. Gates just now, as well as our admissions counselor, to see about getting my son a tour. I’ll try to call her office tomorrow.

M2ck, I read Montegut’s post as saying that they canceled the special tours. But alas, Montegut will be calling to get them to reconsider, I’m well aware that special tours were originally planned.

ahhh…I missed that part of her post…

I thought you were talking about the the CSDay agenda.

Montegut. I hope they will consider doing them after the event…say at 3:30 or so.

Montegut: while the tours are an important piece of making a decision about a school, the juxtaposition of the Celebration with the end of CSD makes for difficult planning. Current students, who are volunteers for the tours, are certainly going to want to be part of a historic celebration, for most of them the only time they’ll get to cheer on a national championship team during their college years.

While frustrating, if you can’t get a tour for your son right after CSD, a good alternative might be to download the iPod tour and do it at your own page. Here’s the link to that if you haven’t seen it: [Help - iTour Bama - The University of Alabama](http://itour.ua.edu/help/)

If you do that, combined with a tour of the honors dorms and the rec center (which you can sweet talk the desk into letting you pop in) and the library (which may be on the iTour) you should get a good view of the campus.

Hi, guys, we never had a special tour scheduled. I spoke to a student worker before the break who said she was going to ask about special tours. After the break, I got a message on my home phone that no special tours would be available as all tour guides would be occupied doing tours. I was not able to talk to the student worker to clarify this.

So, if anybody spoke to a higher up and got a special tour arranged, don’t assume it’s cancelled. I never got confirmation that I would get a tour. I’m not going to call Ms. Gates and ask her to reconsider. I’m just going to call and see if there are student tours available. If they say, no, well, that’s that. Hopefully, my son will see some of the campus during the Capstone activities, and we can perhaps do a self guided tour ourselves before we head back home. I’m going to print up the tour posts from CC to help us out.

Just as an aside, in dealing with other colleges when asking for flexibility, I have found them to have a fixed agenda and are not willing to change their plans. So, I won’t be too surprised or upset if the same thing happens this weekend.

*Hopefully, my son will see some of the campus during the Capstone activities, and we can perhaps do a self guided tour ourselves before we head back home. *

Since parents will be given tours on buses, you may be able to remember what’s best to show your son.

I would definitely take him to:

Shelby and Engineering & Science Complex

Recreation Center

Honors housing

Walk thru some Dining venues like… (just tell the people at the cash registers that you’re visiting and they’ll let you in to look around)

Fresh Food in The Ferg (there’s 2 dining venues in the Ferg…a Food Court style that’s not meal plan, and Fresh Food (which is kind of hidden behind the Food court). You have to walk past the table for the Food Court area to get to Fresh Food. (we totally missed that when we took our first tour.)

Lakeside Dining - downstairs is the huge Meal plan dining hall, upstairs is a C-store, Lakeside Lattes, and this new restaurant Maea that will likely change because I’ve heard that it’s not doing well. It’s actually restaurant-style, but kind of pricey from what I’ve heard. Anyone eat there???

**Burke Dining/B is in Burke Hall East.

Thanks, guys, for the helpful hints on tours. With all the people there for the football celebration, I’m sure there’s not going to be extra staff to spare. Bad timing, unfortunately, but what can you do. Hope you all have a good weekend. Now I’ve got to scramble out to find a jacket with a hood, as my son has outgrown his rain jacket as well.
