Beth’s Mom, curiously my DS12’s GC was just saying yesterday how impressed she is with Auburn. She is usually quite informed and neutral so I am guessing that they must be doing some marketing with counselors. I am very biased about Bama (alumna), a fact that my DS points out, so I did not want to pursue it with my DS present, but, out of curiosity, I am going to ask her privately.

Perhaps it’s also the reason that D’s guidance counselor is not at all positive about UA (but is, curiously, positive about Auburn).

Usually when this happens it’s really more about the person’s association with the name “Alabama” and all the old baggage that is associated with its history. Auburn doesn’t bear the state’s name, so it escapes that old stereotype. There is no other reasonable explanation. Auburn is a good school, but it isn’t a better school.

NJ, I threw in the part about the GC liking Auburn for your benefit - I knew you’d want to kick some butt over that.

M2CK, his preference for Auburn had nothing to do with academics and more to do with fit- he thinks the kids from D’s HS are a better “fit” for Auburn, whatever the heck that means. He is certainly aware that Auburn is a state school and is in the state of Alabama. I promptly discarded his advice and I hope that D did as well. But there are at least 5 times as many kids from D’s high school who go to Auburn as there are who go to Bama, so maybe the kids are listening to that drivel.

he thinks the kids from D’s HS are a better “fit” for Auburn

LOL…that is so not true. Again, Auburn is a fine school but it doesn’t offer anything that would make it a better fit for Midwest kids. As a matter of fact, since its Honors College is much less developed, it could be argued that it is less so.

Well…the change in AU’s scholarships may end up causing the students and parents to rethink the GCs advice.

I think this GC needs to visit Bama and find out how misguided he/she is. :)

Unless your daughter attends high school on a farm. I can’t see how auburn would be a better “fit”.

Of course maybe the guidance counselor fell for auburn’s old OTM recruiting tactic of proclaiming it’s the “safe school” (ie WHITE) where the kids will be sheltered from the “dangers” that abound in Tuscaloosa.

Either way he needs his butt kicked. Now I just need an address to find this punk :-)

We live in the western suburbs of Chicago. Early last November, Bethany did respond with a phone call to an e-mail I sent to her. We had a lovely chat and she reiterated how she would be happy to set up a campus visit for my daughter. I called, e-mailed several times over six weeks in Dec-Jan with no response. I finally called the Honors College directly and the staff put together the schedule. DD had a terrific visit at Honors Day and chose Bama. Bethany did make a visit to DD’s high school in May to present her with an official “suitable for framing” scholarship certificate. Bethany notified us via e-mail a couple of weeks date beforehand of the date/time so my daughter could make arrangements for the college counselor to be available to meet with her. DD also has received the e-mail on her Crimson account about the July meeting in Western Springs.

NJ - I think the second paragraph of your last post hits the nail on the head. And M2CK, the kids from D’s high school who go to Alabama and Auburn aren’t going for the scholarships, so it’s unlikely that scholarship changes at Auburn will make a lick of difference. According to Naviance, no one who applied to UA in the past several years has qualified for either the Presidential or the UA Scholar, and the same is the case for Auburn’s equivalent awards.

I will be curious to see if the Chicago rep becomes more responsive once the powers that be are aware that there have been at least several people who have not received a timely response to their inquiries. Seriously, if there are several people on these boards alone, how many others do you think there are?

Seriously, if there are several people on these boards alone, how many others do you think there are?

Exactly!!! Very good point!!! :)

Hopefully, we’ll hear something from Rick Funk !!!

I agree Beth’s Mom and made that very point in my email to Rick Funk.

Thankfully due to Mom2K’s hard work on the CC site in general. Many have been informed about UA and had their questions answered. But I shudder to think of the ones who didn’t know about this board that never had their emails or inquiries returned by their recruiter.

Hopefully this issue will get corrected.

The fact that there may have been a recruiter in our geographic area is actually news to me. We set up everything with the Honors College on our own – but since we are in a neighboring state it was easy for us to make visits to campus.

Yes, there are many recruiters all over the country. Even in the state of Alabama there are recruiters.
