I'm currently looking to apply to a couple safeties, primarily UH and UAB. If I decided to apply to UH and UAB, I am guaranteed a significant scholarship (I'd get the Blazer Elite scholarship from UAB, which covers almost all tuition per year) and I'd also obtain a renewable engineering scholarship. That would make going to either school very cheap, since I'd only be paying for room/board and books. So my question is this: is it worth attending either school, and are their engineering programs any good?

UH program is relatively well-known among safety schools. Good program and some well known faculty.

but i’m not quite familiar with UAB… probably owing to its low reputation… but i’m not sure

I’ve seen that UAB has a top 150 undergrad engineering program, but that’s all I know

While you’re looking at UAB, you might want to look at Bama and Auburn. UAB was the first school we visited, and we liked it very much. Son decided to give the state of Alabama a chance and ultimately has ended up at Bama, as it was a better fit for him. What type of engineering are you interested in studying?

What type of engineering? The list of ABET accredited engineering degree programs differs somewhat between the various schools.

UH engineers (specifically Chemical, Electrical, and Mechanical) are fairly highly recruited in the Houston area because of convenience. In fact, I bet it’s the most highly recruited school outside of the top 50 in those areas. Those programs are also well funded because there are a large number of engineers in Houston who earn MS degrees at night at UH (Rice does not offer a part-time program and TAMU and UT are too far). Further, there are some well known faculty who were PhD engineers at Exxon, Chevron etc. who retire in the Houston area and teach there.

Outside of those areas, it is a very different picture. Programs like Civil Engineering and Industrial Engineering have much weaker job placements, less well known faculty, and less money from professional master’s degrees.

How do I know? It’s the only school outside the Top 25 from which we recruited.

I’ll add here. I’m currently a freshman EE major at UAB. So far, I love it. And if you’re into research, this is the place to be. I’m already looking into getting into a lab next semester! UAB has one of the best biomedical engineering programs of the south as well. If you decide to check out UAB, you must check out the Science and Technology Honors Program! PM me for any questions.
