DS18 is considering applying to UAH. He knows it is strong in engineering but is not seeing a lot about their science departments, particularly Biology. He is planning to do pre-med. Also, he is from Texas and I’m wondering about OOS student adaptation. I know there are not as many from OOS at UA-Huntsville as UA. Thanks for any input.
I can’t answer regarding biology, although I know UAH is considered strong in nursing. However, I can tell you that my freshman is from central Illinois and is sharing a suite with three kids from North Carolina, the D.C. area, and California. She’s also met several other OOS students who have been attracted to UAH not only for its engineering but also for its scholarships. I was told that OOS students are more plentiful every year. I think it’s a good option for someone who doesn’t feel comfortable with the larger size / emphasis on sports at UA.
UAB might be worth considering. Also large scholarships and affiliated with the large regional medical center and appears to have more of a focus geared toward pre-med preparation.
We are from Texas (kinda) moved here from the West when DD was in 8th grade - DD is planning on attending UAH. She is looking forward to getting out of Texas. She really wanted the North East but really can’t pass on the Tuition/Housing Merit scholarship that will allow her to go to school, take a semester or two to study abroad and graduate debt free with the budget we have for her.
My younger son is a senior at UAH. He roomed with one student from Ohio during his freshman year before moving into his fraternity’s house his sophomore year. We are OOS, and he knows plenty of students from Pennsylvania, Florida, Illinois, Kansas, etc. Many do come because of the outstanding engineering program, but there are opportunities in all programs. My son is currently doing research with his finance professor and applying for postgraduate internships/jobs. When your student visits, set up a meeting with someone who handle pre-med so you can get additional information.
S is a freshman at UAH. We are locals, but his 3 suitemates are all from out of state. It’s true that the number or OOS students increases each year, due in large part to the large merit scholarships.
Good friend’s D attended UAH, majored in Biology, and was premed. She was a NMF and took advantage of the nearly full-ride. Her GPA was very near 4.0, and she is currently in med school. From what I hear UAH has a knowledgeable pre-professional department.
