So I have two schools which I have to decide between. The University of Alabama in Huntsville and the University of Georgia. I have a full ride at UAH and have to pay $15k for UGA. I come from a middle-class family, income of $50,000-70,000.

I haven't fully decided what I want to major in, but it will most likely be engineering or computer science. I've done quite a bit of research on both schools, and kept both as my safeties.

Could anyone please give their opinion, with reason (pros and cons, experiences, etc.), on which school I should attend? I'm really stuck right now and any advice would be greatly appreciated.

UGA is just starting up engineering programs and has a limited set of majors. UAH is known for engineering and there will be many more employers recruiting there for engineering.

OTOH, UAH is a largely a suitcase/commuter school, so the college life/experience is weak compared to UGA.

Are you instate for UAH?

How would you pay the 15k at UGa?

YOU can only borrow 5500 as a frosh, and that is probably already in your Uga FA pkg.

How much will your family pay each year?

I think you should go to UAH and get involved in the eng’g clubs and do co-ops/internships as soon as you can.

btw…which full ride award did you get from UAH??

@BobWallace - Alright, thanks for the advice.

@mom2collegekids - No, I’m OOS for UAH. I think it would be possible to pay 15k at UGA, my family is willing to contribute as well. UAH probably sounds like a good option ATM, mainly because they have better options and research is fantastic. And to UAH I got the Charger Excellence Award.

Yes, there are many research opportunities at UAH.

@BobWallace - Definitely, especially when you consider that Cummings Research Park is the 2nd largest research park in the nation (after Silicon Valley) and 4th largest in the world. Not a bad choice at all.

it looks like the UAH award covers tuition and housing, but you will be responsible for meal plan, books, and any misc costs. Or were you given an additional award?

@elitepwnage
YES, CRP is the 2nd largest research park in the nation…but the Silicon Valley is not the the number one…Research Triangle Park in Raleigh Durham, NC is the largest.

@mom2collegekids - No additional costs, but I’ve got it covered. From my perspective, paying ~$4k/year is better than paying ~$15k+. Alright, UAH it is! Thanks a lot everyone.

@LakeWashington - Indeed.

Seriously…as soon as you can, immerse yourself into the eng’g clubs/groups there and get yourself situated for a co-op or internship.

If you need any tips about the area, feel free to PM me anytime. I have a home in the HSV area (Madison).

@mom2collegekids - OK thank you so much!

Yes, by all means, take M2CK’s advice and get active as soon as you arrive on campus. You won’t likely regret it. Lake Jr. enrolled at a smallish engineering school far away from home, but he’s busy with campus activities and is having a blast, as much as one can have a blast during the times when engineering classes aren’t keeping you locked away in the library or the lab, heh heh.

@LakeWashington - I hear you.
