UAH Scholarships Process (Help is appreciated!)

I’m hoping to apply to The University of Alabama at Huntsville during the fall of my senior year. On their website, they state that a 100% scholarship is awarded to students who have a 1400+ SAT Composite score as well as a 3.8+ GPA. I was wondering if anyone familiar with the process could give me some extra inside information about whether the scholarships are actually given to all students that apply and qualify to receive them and whether or not the process is tedious. Thanks!

@mom2collegekids ?

You just apply and the scholarship is automatic.

However the requirements you stated are not correct - full tuition requires 3.5/1330 and full ride requires 4.0/1490.

Don’t confuse 100% tuition scholarship award with 100% scholarship.

A couple of notes …
They do accept weighted GPA’s.
They do not superscore.

The 4.0/1490 is listed as tuition + housing. This isn’t quite the same as full ride as books are not included. Meals might not be included - it never occurred to me to ask. Regardless, at the time of our visit in March, R&B was tagged at 8500 for two semesters. This compares favorably to other places we’ve been looking, which usually run 10-12k for an academic year.

During our visit, they mentioned they will take any SAT/ACT score up until June or August of the year you start class, and will adjust the scholarship for the highest single sitting. The scholarship requires a 3.0 to maintain, IIRC, which is fairly realistic, I think. What this means is that if you study for the ACT for the next 11-12 months and take it again a year from now, and your weighted GPA punches through 4.0, they will automatically grant you the tuition+housing with no action from you other than making sure they have the scores in time.

Your best bet is to contact UAH directly with questions. The word straight from the university will trump whatever you find on a board. Including (especially?) what I say.

Finally, visit it if you can. If you can’t … virtual tours, y’all tube, and streetview will help.

Oh, and Division 1 hockey. Season opens 9 Oct when Connecticut visits.

Thanks for your help and advice! UAH really does seem like an amazing school albeit expensive but their scholarship programs really do help! Im hoping to secure my place at UAH by december and either take the december or the october SAT to hopefully attain the 1400+ required for the full tuition and I hope to cover the rest with the pell grant and outside scholarships!
Do you know if they penalize for too many SAT sittings?

Again, 1400 is not the cutoff for anything at UAH.

Yes, I realise that, but currently my composite score is 1300 and along with my GPA that only gives me a 45% merit scholarship so I need to raise my composite score and my goal is to get it above 1400.

You need to get it above 1490 for the full ride award…not 1400.

@thumper1 I know. 1400 + 3.8+ GPA is the full tuition. 1490 is the full ride. I never said full ride

Please do take another look at their site:

The site I’m seeing shows a 1330 - NOT a 1400 as the threshold of full tuition for GPAs in the 3.5-3.99 range. When you repeat “1400” and “3.8” as gateway numbers, a lot of us get confused trying to figure out how that relates.

The table is pretty clear: at least 3.5 and a 1330 M&R SAT (or 30 ACT) is full tuition. There is no English/Metric conversion that drives it to a 3.8/1400

The university itself is the best source of information. If you’re serious (and I think you are), contact them.

[edit: Ah, I see, your goal is to get it over 1400. Nevermind, thanks!]

My son, an incoming freshman, was awarded the Charger Excellence Scholarship based solely on his GPA (4.0) and ACT (34). It will cover tuition and housing. Not included: meals (around $1500 per semester) and books ($???). There was no essay or interview required; pretty automatic. We are from out-of-state, and it covers 100% of out-of-state tuition. I don’t remember the exact forms he had to fill out, but don’t remember them being particularly long or tedious.

He did apply for the Honors College later on, and had to include an essay, list of achievements, etc., and maybe a couple of recommendations?? (it’s all a blur now
