UArts Auditions

Uarts is going to be my first audition on 1/20 and I was just curious if anyone had auditioned yet. A lot of the other schools i’ve applied to have threads talking about the way the audition is run but there’s nothing here for uarts. Any info would be awesome! Thanks! :o)

See post number 18 in the General Info thread on UArts, written by a student who auditioned on Dec 2. Good Luck!

I'm auditioning that day too! see you there!

Thanks!! :-) I appreciate it!

I'm auditioning that day too! I must say that now that the date is getting so close I'm starting to get nervous. I'm just hoping I don't blow it on the dance audition (I am not a dancer by any means). I guess we'll see though!

AHHHH I am auditioning for Uarts at Chicago Unifieds and I am pretty freaked out about the random dance part of the audition. Anyone have any further information on that?!?

Glenn

Relax about that part. My daughter ("Broadwaywannabe") auditioned at unifieds last year and did the "random dance" part. She brought in music that she had danced to in an ensemble in some show and just did the dance. It showed she could move and had presence. I assume they were not "studying" technique as much, or they would have designed the dance audition differently.

Glenn,

If you're auditioning at the Chicago Unifieds, a dance should not be required. You'll be auditioning in one of the many rooms for just one person. If dance is a strength, by all means choreograph a solo piece. As there's nobody to teach you a combination, there's no dance requirement. I did Chicago Unifieds and I did not choreograph a piece for myself. They really don't hold it against you, I promise.

Break a leg with all these auditions and remember to take time to breathe in between... :)

Do you HAVE to dance if you audition for MT at Uarts?

BorntoSing: Yes, if you attend the on-campus audition you MUST dance.

There's a group dance audition. It's a combination taught by the head of MT Dance. Lack of dance skills will not break you for this audition, especially if you are very strong in the other two areas. It is mostly to see where, if you are accepted into the school, your dancing ability lies for class placement--either Beginner or Intermediate.

Good luck!

Sheerviolette, that helped a lot- thanks! I was a little worried...

Does anyone know if Guthrie has a callback system?

Travellinghopefully do you mean the BFA acting program administered between the Guthrie and the Univ. of Minn.? You may want to post that question on the mail MT board AND the "Arts Majors" board.

Good luck. :)

school was bootleg and would not answer my questions i would pose during my interview!

Ouch -
I'm very sorry that you had the experience you had. If you have any questions that I would be able to answer about UArts, I would be more than happy to answer them. You can PM me or post in this forum so others can benefit, whichever is more comfortable for you. :)

I auditioned at Uarts this weekend. I thought the audition went well and the people there were really nice. They answered all of my questions.

the questioning process answered my ?s. I am not willing to put 35,000 dollars a yr n 2 a school that can't tell me what kind of connections the school has to the professional world. I can't feel comfortable that I would be able to find work and be able to support myself if i can't get an audition.

It's a shame you walked away feeling that way. For what it's worth, when my daughter auditioned, we did not have the same experience. In the Philadelphia area itself, there are tremendous work opportunities. The Wilma Theatre, Walnut St Theatre, Forest Theatre, Kimmel Center all have productions that draw on local talent. (In fact the Kimmel Center is currently staging Tony and Tina's Wedding which I know from personal experience drew on local talent). There is also a multitude of smaller theatres and companies in center city and its environs that routinely stage productions open to area performers. At the theatre where my daughter goes for acting coaching, I have observed numerous auditions occuring at which the candidates were obviously UArts students or graduates.

In addition, as part of my parental "due dilegnce" (my daughter calls it micromanaging or meddling) I have also made my own inquiries concerning UArts. In addition to corresponding with current students about their experiences in the program, I also have a relationship with a music professional who is heavily connected with all of the professional musicians who play the Phila venues and shows and who has professional relationships with most of the major performing arts venues and organizations in Philadelphia as well as with a nationally known conservatory of music. The word he has gotten is that while the UArts program is young and therefore not as well known nationally as some others, it is the real deal. The professors are very well regarded working professionals, the training excellent and UArts graduates are working professionally.

In addition, I wonder how much weight should really be given to "connections" that a school claims to have and how many graduates actually get work because of those "connections". It's funny, at presentations given at 3 well known MT schools, all 3 schools touted the strength of their alumni network by refering to it as the "(insert name of school) Mafia". It began to sound as if they all used the same PR agency. In addition, at one well known and highly regarded school, a question was asked about Senior Showcases. The answer was strikingly candid. The response was that dozens of senior showcases are put on each year by all of the "name schools" and that in reality all you get are low level "scouts" at them, that Senior Showcases are overrated and rarely do they make a difference in anyone's career and they are swell marketing hype.

Just some thoughts to contrast what for you was unfortunately an unsatisfying experience

Just goes to show that different people have different reactions/experiences at the same place, doesn't it?
How old is UArts' MT program? I know that the University itself says it has been around for quite a long time, but as (if I have this correct) several separate entities that merged. Anyone?
