UArts Dance Audition

In the letter I received confirming my audition appt it said that I’m expected to present a short dance combination. But in the booklet they sent with it, it said that there was a group warm-up followed by a group dance audition in which we’re taught a combination. I saw a similar thread about this, but there wasn’t a sure answer…did anyone ever get one? Should I have a combo prepared and music on my accompaniment CD? Thanks.

FYI: I’m auditioning at the LA Unifieds.

Hi Sweetclyde. I auditioned for UArts at the New York unifieds 2 years ago (and am a current sophomore musical theater major there now). If you are auditioning on campus, there is a group dance audition where they teach you a combination. However, at the unifieds, there isn't space (among other things) to teach a full-scale dance routine. (If the LA unifieds are anything like the NY ones, the rooms are quite tiny and crammed) So instead, UArts asks that you prepare a short (couple of minutes) dance routine just so they can get a sense of your abilities. It would be a good idea to put the music you are dancing to on your accompaniment CD. Don't stress too much about the dance audition.

Hope this helps! feel free to hit me with any other questions

I found this to be quite unclear too. I'm doing it at the NYC Unifieds this year and thats what they said. I emailed them and asked them how long it should be and they said about 2 minutes. Mine is definately only 38 seconds and I can't choreograph any more and expect myself to do it well :P

I also asked them (and various other people online) whether we should do our whole audition in our dance attire or just wear our audition clothes and dance in those, but I still haven't gotten an answer from anyone. Any suggestions?

the outfit that i wore for auditions was an outfit that was pretty easy to move in, so i just did the dance in that outfit....i don't think it particularly matters. honestly, just wear whatever you are comfortable in...and i do emphasize that the dance audition is more for placement for dance levels if you come, not as a major part of the acceptance into the program.

As long as you're not standing still for it, your 38-second piece should be fine. :)
