Just got into SUNY buffalo for pre-pharm off of the waitlist. I wanted to know if i can still be able to dorm instead of living off campus. In the letter i got it said that the dorms are full, but i still have a chance, has any1 had any success? I want to avoid South Campus at all costs. Btw, also looking for a roommate....

Congrats on getting in! My D is prepharm too. Why avoid South “at all costs”? Lots of kids end up loving it there and wouldn’t move to north! There’s a roommie message bd on UB’s SA site here, or try facebook:

thanks for the message board, i’ll be on the lookout. I have a few questions though…

It gives me a choice of housing at about 20 different areas, which would u say the best complex for a freshman? Where is it more laid back?

the letter also said that since i got in off the wait list i am not guaranteed a dorm, is there anyway i can increase my chances of getting into a dorm rather than living off campus?

The person i want to dorm with has already received a dorm since he got accepted earlier. If i state that i want to dorm with him, will that guarantee me a dorm rather than an off campus house?

Is south campus really that bad?

I believe most freshman are housed in Ellicott, but with your late deposit date you’re more likely to be placed on South. More upperclassmen live there, as the schools of nursing, medicine, architecture, and soon pharmacy are all on South campus. Have you visited both campuses? South looks a bit construction zone-like right now, but there are a number of dorms there, from very small to medium sized, and there’s a shopping center directly across the street w/grocery store, etc. There are buses running continually to North and a subway stop for easy access to downtown. I wouldn’t call South campus bad, it’s just older (was the original UB campus), and less isolated from the community. That part of Buffalo is not where most people would choose to live, but it’s certainly not as bad as many surrounding campuses in large cities (think Philly). Common sense should always dictate where you’re going, who you’re with, what time of day it is, etc. There are blue light phones within sight from any point on UB’s campuses.

As far as requesting roommates, BOTH of you have to make the request. The deadline may have passed - call UB asap and get your housing info/choices submitted immediately. My guess is that it doesn’t really matter which of the options you choose right now, you’re likely to just get whatever’s available or nothing. The only other thing that may help you get into a dorm is if you were interested in one of the houses like Leadership House (which requires a separate app). It’s a commitment you’d have to make though, not just a room.

Good luck!

or the undegrad academies

My son is going to be a junior this year. He lived in Ellicott (Spaulding) his first year and then moved off campus the second near South campus. If he was going to live on campus the second year he was going to move to South campus. Many of his friends were placed on South their freshman year and wound up loving it. Socially, south is closer to the “action”. Yes south is a little more sketchy but as long as they are careful it is OK.
