I am going to UB this fall, and I was just wondering, would Ellicott be my best bet for Freshman housing? Or is there another dorm that would be nicer. Also, is there a noticeable difference between a large double and a regular double? I've never heard of a such thing before. Thank you

My best advice to you is to get your housing deposit in as soon as that becomes available to you, and then select your room preferences as soon as they open it up.

Ellicott is on the North Campus as is Governors, Goodyear is on the South Campus. If the majority of your classes are on North, then that is probably where you want to be, but if you delay in putting in your deposit and selecting room preferences you can end up at Goodyear.

My daughter is a freshman this year and has a regular double on Ellicott. It is pretty roomy. They claim Governors is quiet and the rooms are a bit smaller but I don’t know if that is true. Governors is also where the Honors students are usually located. There are also first year interest houses, you should look into those and see if there is anything that interests you and apply.

At orientation they said doubles were “gold” and most freshman end up in triples and quads. That is why it is important not to delay your deposit and room selection.

If I remember correctly you chose 12-16 room preferences and they start with your first choice, if that is filled they move on to your second choice, then third, until they find a space for you.

Hope this helps. Good luck

Unlike what most people assume, housing at south campus is actually NOT that bad. The only inconvenience is taking a 10-15 minute bus ride to north campus everyday for class. Otherwise, the community at south campus is often much better to than of north’s. Many of my friends in north barely talk or know their floor mates. In south, you HAVE to know people, since you’ll be sharing a bathroom with your suite mates and be essentially next to 10 people with a shared laundry, kitchen, and private lounge. However, Ellicott does have its perks, as its simply nearer to campus and is, overall, a safer place than south. Everything depends on your taste and what you like better.

Is there a big difference in housing in Ellicott than in Governors? I am accepted to the honors college, so besides being specifically with honors college students in Governors, are there any advantages to ellicott over governors?

Governors is a smaller complex (4 halls 2 or 3 floors each) and closer to the academic spine. I believe Governors is made up of all doubles and singles, and the rooms are smaller.

Ellicott is further away from the spine, and is a huge complex with 6 Quadrangles each with many buildings. A shuttle runs every few minutes. The rooms are bigger, but range from singles to quads.

@Hong - I didn’t mean to imply South campus housing was sub-standard. It is closer to downtown and I have heard many students like it. Some students prefer to be where all their classes and evening school activities are, and like you said, North campus is in a safer area.

My point to incoming students and their parents, to have the best chance of getting the housing they want, they should get their $150 tuition deposit and $300 housing deposit in as soon as that function becomes available to them.

Freshman housing is based on first come first serve, and I know of many freshman students that had to either go in over-flow rooms temporarily and then move again, or could not secure housing on campus because they delayed their deposits and had to find off campus housing.

Because Governors houses the Honors students, that particular dorm area is a bit quieter and low key. Ellicott tends to be rowdier and more dorm like. Here is a breakdown of each of the housing options and photos so you can see the physical differences:

Its all in what you prefer. My son is part of the Honors College so he requested Roosevelt Hall which is where they house the Honors student in a section of the Governors dorm.

I would definitely hurry up and get that deposit in. He had his in already back in February!

I have had mine in since February also, but will changing my preferences slightly, for example changing my third choice from a single to a triple, effect my place in the first come first serve process?

As long as your application is in and deposits are paid, making changes to your preferences will not effect your status.

Here is a good source that may help you.

I’m sorry for all the questions, but would adding a roommate preference who entered the deposit later effect it?

Is it true that governor’s has no wifi?
