I am a senior in high school trying to figure out if I should go to Geneseo or UB. I’ve been accepted to both, and I’m still on the fence after visiting Geneseo and I’m familiar with UB because I live in Buffalo. I’m currently undecided because I’m not really sure what I want to do, although I’m pretty sure I want to work in a STEM field. I liked the feel of Geneseo from its small campus, and I’ve heard good things about their academics. However, I like UB because of the wide range of majors to pick from (which is helpful since I’m undecided) plus the research opportunities. I plan on dorming either way, so being close or far from home doesn’t bother me too much. Price doesn’t matter either because my tuition is covered under the say yes scholarship program from buffalo public schools. I’m just not too sure which school is best for my situation.
They’re both great options but, like I’m sure you realize, very different vibes. Geneseo is small, in the middle of nowhere, very LAC feel. UB is a huge research university. Can you visit Buffalo? Sometimes just being on the campus helps. If not I’d do more research with regards to talking to students, looking up campus life and options for students. Academically they’re both totally fine.
Being undecided, the LAC nature of Geneseo could serve you well. There are not that many public Liberal Arts Colleges out there. The Integrated Science Center at Geneseo is state of the art. We’re big fans of a good Liberal Arts education. Wife and I graduated Geneseo, she’s a great teacher and I’ve done very well in the business world. D has been accepted, but it looks like she is going with Emerson (also accepted) because the combined Journalism/Marketing/Creative Arts program is something Geneseo can’t really offer her. Good luck deciding, and congrats on the acceptances!
I woukd definitely choose Buffalo. I would say the top SUNY STEM schools are Buffalo and Stony Brook. Buffalo also has top grad STEM fields, so it gives the undergraduate school a little ledge. And you are right, since you are undecided but are thinking about a STEM field, Buffalo is definitely the way to go.
Congrats on both though!
