UB vs SBU in different programs

Comparing SUNY Buffalo to SUNY Stony Brook in various ways. I have (not entirely solid) plans to either go into academia or law school. Possible majors, in order of current interest include:

1) Chemistry (interested in numerous sub-disciplines)
2) Linguistics and/or psycholinguistics
3) Political science and/or international relations
4) Philosophy
5) Economics
6) Psychology
7) Journalism/rhetoric/etc

The first three are all pretty close. As I understand it, UB has slightly better programs in everything but the hard sciences, such as chem. SBU, as I understand it, has top-class research facilities, and as someone interested in researching medication and drug discovery, this would be very useful to me.

The atmosphere at UB, however, sounds much better to me. SBU, being a commuter campus, lacks a real "college vibe", I hear. On top of that, I'm from Suffolk County myself, and I would much prefer an urban environment farther away from my family and the life I know. I've never lived outside of Suffolk, and I haven't left Long Island in around 10 years. I desperately want that to change. UB also has better financial aid going for it.

Is SBU that much academically better than UB? Which of the two schools would you go to, if offered this choice?

B-U-M-P, bump! Bump! Bump!

If you’d prefer to go to UB, go there. Remember that most of the academic differences people talk about are at the graduate level. I can’t imagine that UB’s chemistry program is vastly inferior to SBU’s for undergrads.
