UBC general admissions discussion thread

@ubc2022 No you cannot.

Yah. I’m a US student. I’m pretty sure the window was between January-April

Have not received any information yet. Who has found out so far? I sent my application in November but had to wait for my transcripts to be sent which they did February 1. Hoping to hear back soon!

My D (US student) applied to UBC on January got accepted email 2 weeks ago and yesterday she got International Major Entrance Scholarship (IMES) and Outstanding International Student Award. scolarships.

I got waitlisted for Commerce (1st choice), with an IB predicted grade of 34 and a pretty decent ECs/Personal Profile.

Here’s what they said:

"We have evaluated your application and due to the competitive nature of the program to which you have applied, we are not able to offer you admission at this time. We will continue to monitor your competitiveness relative to the rest of the applicant pool and any changes to your application status will be noted on the Student Service Centre on or before May 15th. You do not need to submit any additional documents or transcripts."

Pretty stressed because there isn’t a lot of forums online that talk about this. Did any of you get a waitlist as well? If so, do you happen to know the chances of getting in off the waitlist? Thanks. Maybe any of you can share something about a friend’s waitlist or something, it can really help with my anxiety :frowning:

@oldguns When did you notice that you got waitlisted? My friend got waitlisted for sciences back in early february and his second choice does not have a decision posted yet. Whats your second choice? You should be accepted if its arts and then transfer after first year with a solid GPA. Are you a US student? If so, do you mind me asking what your SAT/ACT score was?

Subjective:
Extracurriculars:
Science Clubs and science internships
Orchestra, first chair

Summer Activities:
Research Internships

Essays (rating 1-10, details):
I thought I was guaranteed to get in (a conditional acceptance), which was quite stupid to think now that I’ve seen one of my very intelligent friends get rejected, so I did not spend much time on my essays. Read and completed them in 1 hour, copying and pasting from essays for other colleges. That being said, I am a pretty decent writer, so they probably came across as good, but cheesy.

Teacher/Counselor/Additional Recommendations (rating 1-10, details): I didn’t get to read them, but they’re probably good. Not amazing, just good.

Other
Country (if international applicant): USA
School Type: private international school
Ethnicity: Mixed
Gender: Female
Income Bracket: >200k
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): none (I will be paying domestic tuition fees, so the extra money from being an international student is not a hook in this case)

Reflection
Strengths: Pretty solid all around
Weaknesses: Just being an average person
Why you think you were accepted: My predicted scores

My D was accepted yesterday to the Faculty of Science (Vancouver) which was her 1st choice. She had previously been accepted to Arts about a month ago.

She’s a dual citizen living in the US. and we’re visiting campus next week. Still a few decisions from US schools to come in this week.

are we going to have decisions out at least before may 1st? ive been refreshing my status multiple times a day for the past month and still nothing from the faculty of science

@StressssedOut same! My friend got hers and was like omg UBC sent them and I was so excited but then there was nothing there :frowning: They might be doing it by major??

@aweinst I am fairly certain I applied for psychology which is probably a very popular major if that tells you anything, I just want to know when to expect a decision [-(

@StressssedOut same! Literally on spring break in Vancouver right now to look at the campus and it kinda sucks that I don’t know. Like what if I get rejected while I was on the tour??? SOOO not good. Hopefully it’s an acceptance and hopefully soon. It makes no sense on how they send these decisions.

Hi, I am a US student with Canadian citizenship and my SSC application status for my first choice of UBCV Science got updated a few days ago and it reads as follows:
“We have evaluated your application and due to the competitive nature of your program, we are not able to offer you admission at this time. Your application has been placed on a waitlist. We have not yet finalized our enrolments and if a space becomes available, you will be notified as soon as possible via email. All waitlisted applicants will receive a decision no later than May 15th. You do not need to submit any additional documents or transcripts at this time.”

I notice that this message is different from what my friends and other applicants on reddit and CC waitlist messages say, which read as follows:
“We have evaluated your application and due to the competitive nature of the program to which you have applied, we are not able to offer you admission at this time. We will continue to monitor your competitiveness relative to the rest of the applicant pool and any changes to your application status will be noted on the Student Service Centre on or before May 15th. You do not need to submit any additional documents or transcripts.”

Does this mean I am on a “better” waitlist? I am not really sure what it means but I am assuming if a spot opens up UBC will send me an email for an offer of admission. I am currently waiting on my decision for my second choice of UBCV Arts. Any help is appreciated, thank you.

@StressssedOut I just contacted the college caller who came to my school and have been emailing her for some time. I asked her the other day about decisions and she said that since my major is competitive, the decisions will come out in the next week or two. I applied for kinesiology. Hope this helps!

@aweinst Good to know. thank you!! It helps to know when to expect the decisions

Hi. My daughter goes to an International school in Hong Kong. She was also awarded the International Major Entrance scholarship of CAD 80,000. I am sure if she is going to take it as she’s more Keen on studying in the US. Unfortunately she was rejected by UCLA and USC. Still waiting for others. How similar is UBC to schools like UCLA. My older daughter goes to UCLA and is happy there… However she feels the international networking is not very strong.

Hey. I was wondering whether UBC considers your 11th grade scores during admissions for international students? I am a student in India and my 11th grade scores aren’t great.

Just got my acceptance letter as a student from the US! Interested to know if there is a chance I will receive aid or if those scholarships have already been awarded?

I’m incredibly nervous, I’m from the US and I STILL haven’t heard anything. I think its because I applied to the Sauder School of Business for a program choice but still this is kind of weird that I haven’t heard yet

@lesliekat I talked to the advisor when I toured there on Tuesday and she said that this year the admissions office has been very tardy and that they only sent 700 acceptances this year when the years before they had sent 1400 at this time. She said we will hear by the next two weeks. I know it is annoying but you shouldn’t worry for now. They’re just being slow lol
