Hello! I am an international student from Ecuador. I got an offer from University of Manchester to study Electrical and Electronic Engineering. I also received an offer from University of British Columbia to study Electrical Engineering and I’m waiting a decision from University of Toronto to study engineering as well.
I really like all of these Unis. I like U of Manchester because its location and the opportunity to explore other cities in the UK, but looking at the rankings, UBC and U of T seem to have a better reputation.Taking into consideration the international reputation, course reputation, environment, and the fact that I would like to get a masters degree in another top university, maybe in the US, do you think UoM is a better option over the others Unis? I would appreciate your opinion.
UBC has a great location as well. It’s a beautiful city with a moderate climate. It’s very convenient for outdoors activities as well as visiting the US and Canada. It’s somewhat closer to Ecuador too. Have you visited either country before? The deadline to accept your acceptance from UBC is June 1.
U of T has sent out the majority of its acceptances by now. Have you checked the online portal to see if there’s a decision there?
I have not visited neither the UK nor Canada. Comparing Canadian university system and British university system, what do you think could be better?
I feel more inclined to choose UoM because I could travel a little across the UK and Europe. I have heard that flights are pretty cheap and it’s also easy to travel between cities and European countries. But Vancouver is great option as well.
Taking into consideration the international reputation, course reputation, teaching methodology, and environment which Uni could be better?
I’m a sponsored student from the Ecuadorian Government and I must make a decision this week in order to avoid delay with the application of my schoolarship funds.
I’ve checked the online portal of UoT, but I there’s no decision yet. Today I sent an email to the University asking for my application status.
I have no knowledge of UK universities. Both UBC and Manchester are ranked in the top 100 by QS World University rankings. U of T is ranked #27.
I am familiar with U of T engineering and I suspect UBC is similar. Courses are very difficult. There is a lot of material and a lot of hours spent in class and doing problem sets and studying. There is a sink or swim mentality. UBC does have a high retention rate of 94%.
Reddit is a popular website for current Canadian students and you will likely get more help there.
Reputation should not matter between these schools. Outside of HYPSM & Oxbridge, reputation tends to be local (so Manchester would be more respected/known in the UK while Toronto & UBC would be more respected/known in Canada; in the US, Toronto would have an edge). They’re all big publics and I expect all 3 to be sink-or-swim and EE at all 3 to be very tough. The biggest difference (besides the country) is that at an English uni, you will study solely the courses in your major while there is a little more leeway to take some courses outside your major at Canadian unis.
And personally, I’d choose Toronto and Vancouver over Manchester as a place to live/visit.
