UBC/McGill housing applications

Hi everyone,

I'm seriously considering attending either McGill or UBC next year as opposed to staying in Europe. Quick question about housing though: do enrolled students who submit deposits and/or housing applications earlier receive more/better choices for their dorms? Or is it random?

Also, I'm considering doing something pretty weird. I've applied for several British schools and must ultimately wait for my final IB schools in July to see whether I can attend one of these schools. I have some pretty high conditional grades though and I'm not sure whether I'll be able to make them. Would it be wise to pay a deposit and accept an offer of admission NOW from either UBC or McGill (haven't made up my mind)? There would be two scenarios: a) if I receive the grades I need and get accepted in England, I would withdraw/"dropout" in late July or b) in the case that I don't make the grades, I'd come to Canada. I would rather stay in England but am using Canada as a backup plan for low grades.

Thanks for any help!
