Hello everyone,
Got admitted to both UBC and BU and I’m not sure which I should go for. I will be focusing on film and business, and although I’ve heard BU’s business school is amazing, I’m not sure if their filming opportunities match up to that of Vancouver’s. Additionally, is BU really worth the price? I’m an international student and need to pay around 70K$ per year, my parents have said that although they currently do not have enough money to pay off the uni, they would consider taking loans.
Finally, in terms of prestige and employment rate, which university is better? Almost all of the ranks online show that UBC is much better ranked, but isn’t BU much more recognizable globally?
Thanks so much!
UBC costs less than half! In US dollars COA is about 32K. UBC is in a vibrant, urban location and is well connected internationally. I vote for UBC.

Yeah, I think it makes sense financially as well but my parents want me to go to a university they think will definitely land me a job in the future. Do you think this is the case for UBC?
I can’t answer the question regarding employment and I imagine that where you eventually choose to live might have some bearing on that.
However USNWP ranks BU 37th and UBC 40th in the world. Times Higher Education ranks BU 64th and UBC 34th. You can quibble with rankings but to me this suggests they are similar with respect to global reputation.
@Schifang omg I’ve been accepted to those two universities too! BU- I got into film production; UBC- Media Studies (but i will be focusing on film). I’ve been trying to do research on both and weigh the pros and cons of each, but it is difficult to say still. Although BU isn’t located in a place with a lot of filming going on, it does offer a lot of internships and it seems that most of its grads land jobs soon after graduating. Similarly, UBC has a lot of co-ops that allow you to work in your field. Because of these co-ops, it is also fairly easy to get jobs after grad. I’m honestly not sure which university if easier to land a job though; I think you would have a pretty good shot with both in this aspect. I can’t say much about the business schools, because I haven’t looked into that. Both unis are pretty well known, but I think it’s harder to get into BU, which makes it stand out.
And omg, I am in the same situation with my parents about the whole financial aspect. They mostly want me to be able to find a job after grad, so they are willing to get loans for BU. But I’m leaning towards UBC. If you’re doing film, it’s not really about which university you went to, but really how much experience you have with filming. Also, personally, I don’t want to spend $70k a year for FILM CLASSES (however, you’re also focusing on business, so that is considered as well).
Anyway hope that helps! Good luck!
