Hi all, I am in need of some advice.
I am currently deciding which university to attend (UBC, McGill, or UofT). I plan on studying biochemistry in my undergraduate and going to the US for graduate school afterwards, eventually working in research. I currently live in Ontario so UBC and McGill are quite far.
Which university has the best research opportunities? Which will be the hardest in terms of maintain a 3.7+ GPA? Is grade deflation higher in one school than another? Which one is considered the most prestigious from the perspective of US school (I know prestige is a factor grad schools tend to care about in the US)?
Which one would you choose and why?
Thank you for asking.
You will probably get people biased towards UBC here. Nevertheless, all of these schools are good, so US grad schools should recognize them.
According to the QS Rankings for Biology and Chemistry, UofT>McGill>UBC. (These rankings are heavily based on research output.)
I’ve heard that U of T really kills grades. UBC drops grades as well, but I don’t think as much so. I’m sure McGill also drops grades. I know that the grades are inflated, but I don’t know how much so. I know Canadian high schools have lots of grade inflation, but I don’t know if universities have them as well or not. I would assume that the average GPA of students in the schools I mentioned would be around 2.8-3 or so.
Canadian universities are easier to get into, but are tougher to stay in. Failure rates are shockingly high, and grades drop more.
I don’t know for other schools, but then UBC is definitely getting more international exposure given its student diversity. Pair that with increased funding from the Canadian government, I think UBC is going to get bigger in the future (also more research opportunities).
Also, the new president of UBC recently announced his plans to make UBC get into the top 20s in world university rankings.

Hope it helped!
