UBC VS UofT (Canada)

I'm planning to study at Canada but I don't know how good these universities (UBC, U of T) are. I mean, UofT is a well-known university in the world but i read some negative things about it....like size, professors, etc. Could anyone tell me which is better and in what areas?

please anybody answer!!

have you done a search?

both are great; it comes down to the location that you prefer.

Exactly. In case you didnt know, UBC has around 4000 freshmen undergrads each year

i woudl go U of T, way better + more prestigious

UofToronto=7000 freshies
(my brothers go there.)
Like s/he said, it is a matter of preference. U of T is more renowned, if you are thinking about grad school, but it's much more competitive. You can have a lecture class with 1000 people in it. UBC may have a course not offered at UofT.

OK so both are good ones! I want to study Economics....what do you think? In Economics both are good too??

UBC Commerce is very good. That is what you would study there. Look at Phillip Ivey school at Western too.

http://www.econphd.net/rankings.htm

I believe that U of T has a more prestigious economics program than UBC.. but then, both of them are excellent schools. Also, for U of T, depending on which campus you go to, the atmosphere can drastically change.

Same with UBC (UBC Okanagan, for example)

On another thread, somebody claimed that U of T's Commerce program was poor in comparsion to the other high quality programs offered there. I have no way of verifying the validity of that statement though. If you're interested in getting a business degree, Queens University is probably the most well-known in Canada (and internationally?)

Either way, UBC and U of T are both excellent schools. You can't go wrong at either university.

If you're taking weather into consideration, Toronto is very hot and humid in the summer, and Vancouver gets a lot of rain, but it's not uncomfortably hot there.

You will get snow in the winter in Toronto and mostly rain in Vancouver

So UBC and UofT are both good universities ok! and then....is it better to apply from a canadian college to university or it's the
same if I apply from a university from my country to a canadian one.

cdn - yeah I stated that queens comm is a more reputable program than uoft commerce. But dont get me wrong, both schools are fantastic. UofT comm is in the same league as UBC Sauder anyways. And id say Ivey is the most reputable in the world but queens is defintely up there.

both UBC and UofT are good schools but I would hands down pick UBC. UofT just isnt a real university. It is a zoo. They admit so many people because their admissions standards are relatively low...each class has a 1000 kids.

UBC ppl seem extraordinarly happy. UofT is like a huge depression mill.

daniel_pucp, are you referring to undergraduate or graduate school?

I think that, at least for undergraduate, there are more spaces reserved for Canadian citizens/residents compared to international students because the universities are public and their primary goal would be to educate its own citizens. The main difference with applying as an international student is that there are only a certain number of spaces avaliable, and many students vying for those seats. I'm not sure what would happen if you were an international already studying in Canada, or what the process is for graduate studies.

On another note, from what I've read about UBC and UofT, the two universities have very different atmospheres (and it would also vary between the campuses since both have multiple locations). In general, it seems like U of T has bigger classes (as mentioned earlier), and has a more "on your own" attitude whereas UBC is smaller and more community-oriented (sorry, can't think of the right word right now).

Hopefully this helps. Sorry if I misinterpreted your question -it's getting late.

Do not heed aca's advices.

I have read his past posts, all of which seem to discredit the University of Toronto in general. Frankly, I find his remarks to be offensive - a "zoo"?; a "depression mill"? - and they do not in any way contribute to a constructive discussion of the merits and/or drawbacks of the University's programs.

As for my personal opinion, both UBC and UofT have excellent Commerce/economics programs. Their economics departments rank among those of top universities in the world, and reputation and academics-wise, you will be well off at whichever university you choose to attend. It really depends on the kind of atmosphere you are looking for, as CDN_dancer elaborated.

Cheers.

do not listen to ibkid

UofT COMMERCE IS HORRIBLE, it's the worst schools in UofT

anything other than economics and commerce, I would pick UofT over UBC

Thanks for all the answers. I guess I'm gonna travel to Canada in July to see for myself some universities and colleges. And if you're right CDN_dancer I guess I'm gonna need some luck.

Best of luck with the university application process! I'm sure you'll succeed no matter what school you attend. Hope you have a great time travelling in Canada.
