I’ve narrowed down my college choices to UBC and UT Austin.

UT is ~25k, UBC is ~ 30k
The only thing stopping me from attending UBC is that I don’t know enough about student life. I know a lot of people at UTexas and it is close to home and cheaper, but UBC is a great unknown.

Can someone please shed some light on UBC for me? Is it worth the extra 5k to try and make my way in a beautiful foreign land?

first of all, what got you interested in applying to UBC?
second of all, look at the ubc website for undergraduates, and see what aid and scholarships they have for international applicants.

I think UBC is really beautiful school, beautiful location, and in world rankings, its quite high. its a top tier school and if you want more info, id recommend wikepedia my best friend, and the actual website. ALSO, ive never been to the campus, so I took the virtual tour online, just search ubc virtual tour:)

The UBC student life is great if you live on campus or on student residence. Residences such as Totem Park (1st year res) always have parties going on (especially initially), and the frats are close by. or if you are the more chill type who would like to socialize in a different way and study a bit more, there is Place Vanier (also for first years). if you live on rez, life on campus is great. You will meet a lot of people, make lots of friends, and generally have a great time! The one con for me about UBc’s student life though is the UBC sports, the school spirit/sport spirit just does not compare to the US schools, it is as if a lot of students dont give a crap (then again, our teams arent that great, well we have a good hockey and basketball team but our football team is atrocious).

The campus itself is beautiful, with lots of great scenery, you can see the mountains from certain residences, you can see the ocean, and the beach (Wreck Beach) is close to rez.

My take on UBC student life: if you join clubs/get involved/live on campus, you will meet plenty of friends and have tonnes of fun. Throw in the amazingly beautiful campus, the international reputation, and the amazing education you’ll get, and this decision becomes a no-brainer. UBC all the way.

Also - UBC has an excellent website for international applicants: connectionsforlife.ubc.ca
