i have narrowed all my college choices down to four. i am planning to do civil engineering, perhaps with a specification in environmental. i am torn between these four schools.

SUNY Buffalo
i really liked, and have been accepted into the honors college. the one thing that bothers me is the lack of an urban environment. otherwise i like the school, but would like to hear what others thing about strength and reputation of the engineering program

Cuny City College
i also really liked city, and also would be part of the honors college (macaulay). its a great deal and i believe the program is strong. i dont like the fact that its a commuter school and i am unsure about what life there is on campus.

Mcgill
again i really liked, it cost about twice what the other two would so thats a setback and i would be curious to hear about its reputation in the us as far as getting jobs.

GW
beautiful school, but even with a large scholarship it cost the same as mcgill. i am not sure how strong the engineering school is however and i cant tell if id be getting a better engineering education elsewhere

so all in all id like to hear what people know about which program is strongest and what the better choice would be. any feedback would help. thanks so much in advance

This may or may not help you but I’ll give you my thoughts…

I still have my engineering rankings list (USNWR- undergrad)

57- U Buffalo
92- GW
I don’t find CUNY on the list.

Buffalo has a great engineering program. My son, like you , had great schools to choose from, OOS publics, SUNY’s and Privates. Overall he liked the engineering program at Buffalo the best. Buffalo is very big on the sciences. (Stony Brook is 70 by the way.)

I hear Macauly is wonderful and you will have great perks that go along with it. Fit and location have to work for you though.

My freshman son is enjoying Buffalo. Kids generally stay in after the first couple of weeks, going out to parties, etc… Social life seems to be in the dorms and campus activities. He has gone on road trips with friends he’s made to Toronto. My son was blown away at accepted students day last spring as he saw all the things going on in the engineering labs. He knew this was the school for him.

If money is an issue, stick with Macaulay or UB. McGill has a good reputation in general though I know nothing about it’s engineering program. GW- good school of course.

If money is an issue (and even if not) I’d go with City College or UB. No need to spend more than you have to if you will get a good education and are happy.
