Hi guys,
I’m just looking for a bit of advice. Throughout my time at junior college, I’ve really struggled with mathematics. I’ve pushed myself incredibly hard, only to experience one failure after the next. I’ve had so many personal problems and I’ve been speaking to a therapist lately about my problems. I was diagnosed with ADHD last year but have tried to refrain from taking stimulants.
During winter quarter, I failed multivariable calculus. I just learned though that I was accepted to UC Santa Barbara and am basically sure my acceptance will be invalidated. Everything pretty much came crashing down this quarter and I’m in a weird place as far as my confidence in myself goes. Getting to attend UCSB would be the opportunity of a lifetime and I feel like I should be able to talk with somebody at the school to explain what I’ve been going through and why my transcript is so poor.
I seriously am not here to complain about my issues but I really am wondering if anybody has gone through, or knows somebody else who has had a similar experience. I don’t know what my next move should be.
Thanks for reading!
The best thing for you to do will be to contact admissions at UCSB and update them on the situation. If you can retake the class before you transfer, I think that would be the ideal situation. In my opinion, I think you should have retaken it during this current quarter as it would have shown some dedication to rectifying your situation but not all hope is lost. Hopefully you can retake this summer and everything will work out but definitely let UCSB know ASAP so you know your options.
Hey! Ive been at ucsb since my freshman year so im not too sure about transfer procedures however, ucsb is a very understanding campus! My own grades have been garbage because of some things i’ve been dealing with myself. If I was you I’d get in contact with the dean of the college you’ve been admitted to. Explain what’s been going on, what has changed, how you’re preparing yourself for ucsb, how you’ll succeed at ucsb, etc etc. As long as you have reasonable circumstances (which i believe you do) the school will help you out. We also have CAPS on campus, counselling and psychological services, which is free for students. I’d look into that! Its a great resource. Theres also DSP, disabled students program, where you can request notes, separate rooms for exams with extra time, etc if you have a verified disability (ADHD).
Good luck and I hope your admittance stands! See you next year
Thank you guys for the responses!
@ridiarte Oh definitely! I’m on spring break right now and will be retaking the course this quarter. Thank you for the advice! I’m going to be talking to UCSB soon.
@Merle123 Thank you for all that info! It means a lot. It’s good to know that SB can be understanding and I’ll definitely be taking all that into account! And I’m really glad you like UCSB, have a nice quarter!
@Merle123 My son has ADHD and plans to start at UCSB as a freshman this fall. He is coming from a small HS and is not proactive and I am concerned about his executive functioning challenges affecting his ability to manage his time as well as his non-academic life and that he will fall through the cracks with the large impersonal lectures and lack of a single advisor. Do you have suggestions or do you know how we can know that he is not falling through the cracks? He will get accommodations approved from DSP but they are only for extra time. Thanks.
