Just wondering if UC admissions were tougher this year.

Applied for mech engineering for UCSD, UCD, and UCI
I got rejected from SD (i was 50/50 there) and Davis and got into Irvine
SD was not really a surprise but Davis was. I had an SAT score of 2070 and a 4.2 weighted GPA. I'm also graduating with 11 AP classes under my belt. All of this led me to think I had a very good chance for Davis and was confused when I got rejected. I asked around and a lot of people didn't get in to Davis, but some did with lower SAT and GPA scores. Naturally those two things don't make up an entire student but I was wondering if UC admissions were a lot harder this year.

Considering that the average SAT and GPA for Davis for last year was 1900 and 4.0 respectively

All UC campuses saw an increase in their applications, so naturally you would see an increase in the rejections if they kept admit rate the same as last year. I really think the competitiveness depends upon the major. My older S got into UCD and UCI last year with a GPA 4.2 ACT 24, 7 AP and 3 Honors classes, very good essays and EC’s. His major was Environmental Science. My younger S this year was rejected from UCD and UCI with lower GPA 3.7 higher ACT 31 and 10 AP, 2 Honors classes OK EC’s and essays but his major was Computer Science. I think BME,CS and ME were probably the most competitive majors plus the UC’s seem to have focused on Higher GPA vs Higher test scores. This my observation comparing the last 2 years. UCI is still a great option. Good Luck to you.

Thank you, any advice (from anyone) on whether it’s worth the time and effort to appeal to Davis?

If you have new and compelling information that you left off your original application, I would try for an appeal. What have you got to lose???

To be truthful I have no new information to add, just that I want to go to Davis. Maybe I could scrounge something up, I don’t have any idea what the appeal rate is for Davis maybe Ill first visit a thread on UCD appeals before deciding

Too bad b/c I have a friend that got rejected from UCI and accepted into UCD who desperately wants to attend at UCI. He is now appealing to get into UCI. Wish there was a way for all of the colleges to figure out who really wants to go where and who is just applying as a “safety”. It would make this so much easier for everybody if the process was more efficient.

I think it’s because the major you applied for is competitive and hard to get into for any person, not just you. A very bright girl at my school who applied for chemical engineering got rejected from a few UCs or accepted but with a different major than she wanted. So I think it’s mostly the engineering major that was the tough part because your stats are good.

Note that some divisions or majors may be more selective than typical at a given UC campus. So using the overall average for enrolled frosh at UC Davis may underestimate the selectivity for popular divisions or majors there.

here is the link for Davis admission stats for fall 2013. If you check your stats against it you will see that no band of stats had 100% admit rate http://admission.universityofcalifornia.edu/campuses/files/freshman-profiles-ca/freshman-profile-ca-ucd.pdf

and that ^^ is an averaged profile, engineering would have been tougher.

If you feel strongly and have something new to add, you should appeal, though.

Absolutely. Engineering at all of the UC’s is much tougher, and requires higher than average stats.

OP: what was your SAT breakdown? Did you take Math 2?

Been busy past few days, and to reply to bluebayou, my SAT broke down as: Reading 770, Math 630. and Writing 650

And what is Math 2? AP Calc BC? Cause if so, I’m taking it as a senior

Math is on the low side for Eng’g at UCD /UCSD.

I realized that, but I did take the AP calc exam and (like most everyone0 got a 5,so i was hoping it would balance out

@GimmeScreenName

By Math 2, he means the SAT Subject Math 2 Exam

Oh, I didn’t take any of those. I thought those were just cash grabs by the collegeboard considering they also issued AP tests and the SAT

It’s almost a requirement to take Math II and any science SAT subject test if you apply for Eng’g major.

SAT II subject test are only recommended by some UC’s and UCD has no such recommendations although both my sons went ahead and took the Math 2, World History and Bio. If you did well it would have probably helped offset the low SAT math score.

I guess I should have done that, but I can’t see how just not taking subject tests could have affected my outcome so much. Anyhow, I talked to a lot of my friends, and it looks like computer science, engineering, and pre med were the most impacted for Davis. If I just applied for an easier major I might have gotten in
