UC admissions

Hey guys I was just wondering about the admission chances of UC's. I recently talked to UC admissions reps at a college night fair in the area, and UCSB, UCD, and UCSC said that the major you choose (besides engineering) does not affect your admission chance. With that being said, how does that work? I do understand that impacted majors such as engineering obviously affects your admissions chances but hypothetically speaking, what if there are 5000 students who apply for a general biology major, while there are 500 for an art major. Wouldn't that affect your admissions chance by being in your favor if you were applying for the art major since there are less students applying, and not in your favor if you're applying for the bio major since there are way more students applying? Or does it depend on the number of seats offered in a certain major? How big the college is? Just very curious. Thanks!

Major selection for non-engineering majors may not affect admission to the school, but there may be an admission process to declare the major. For example, UCSB economics requires at least a 2.85 GPA in prerequisite economics courses, and no grade lower than a C in prerequisite economics, math, and statistics courses. See http://www.econ.ucsb.edu/undergraduate/pre_majors_and_majors.html</a> . Check each school and department for details.

^^ what this said. For more competitive majors you are actually listed as pre-Econ or pre-whatever and later when enrolled have to apply to get accepted into the actual major. So major didn’t affect your admission chances into the university.

Word! Thank you! Any other info would be great as well.
