UC advice

Wow, this is an old thread. I am a UCI alumnus and currently am a graduate student at another UC campus. Definitely a great place to get your undergrad degree.

I'd move SB up two notches on flopsy's list (a virtual tie with Davis), but just my opinion.

why do some of you dislike UCI? Is there incredible amounts of competition, lack of diversity, or is it the difficulty of the classes??

coureur,
Your Post #7 is not accurate. My D received a full ride at UC Berkeley via the Regents/Chancellors -- tuition, housing, everything. Definitely "real cash," and in spades.

However, of course you're right about the non-application. UC solicits the candidate, not vice-versa.

uci is a great up-and-coming school. But, it has more of a commuter feel to it than does Davis or SB....

yackity yack: any advices how to appeal to the admission people at UCI.. like ECs, atleast how many community service hours, etc? = ] What was your GPA/SAT? (You had some good scholarships)

why do some of you dislike UCI? Is there incredible amounts of competition, lack of diversity, or is it the difficulty of the classes??

do you have to take sat II for the UCs? b/c i haven't but i want to apply, i live in indiana

yup, 2 Subject Tests required from different disciplines (can't take two sciences). Also, Math 1 no longer accepted.

UC requires a higher GPA/SAT score if you are from out of state....... =[

Our college visit to UCSB started with a secretary saying "you're interested in MT? What are you doing here?" Needless to say, that made things short and sweet. UCSD has a great theatre program, but no particular emphasis in MT( I belive) , although the La Jolla Playhouse has previewed many fine, Broadway bound shows. Bear in mind, though, undergrads would not be involved with them. UCI has an honors emphasis in MT, but a one month program in NYC. That sold it for my son. (Plus, this year it jumped to #10, over Davis and Santa Barbara in U.S. News and World Report for top public universities.) Go anteaters!!!

Maybe they've improved it in the last couple of years. When my daughter was offered a Regents at Berkeley two years ago it was only something like $500/semester or something like that - more honor than cash. Davis, on the other hand, offered her significant money. She ended up going to neither one.

Okay, here is the answer from a thread on the Berkeley board:

"At Cal, the value of the Regents Scholarship depends on your financial need. In a nutshell, it replaces any loans or work study in your financial aid package with grants. If you had virtually all loans, then yes, Regents would be close to a full ride. If you have no calculated financial need, however, Regents is reduced to an anemic $500 per semester."
