Okay, so I know that in order to be eligible for admission that you have to complete the a-g requirements. With a C or better.

My question is what if a student in their senior year has already fulfilled that, however they get a D or F in a science class of their senior year? For example: the student is taking a fourth year of science (physics)..(i think its three years required) but they are struggling and may end up with a D or F. If the student is admitted to a UC or cal state, will this revoke their admission once senior grades come out? Since they have already fulfilled the a-g requirement, and are taking and extra year of science?
Sorry if I confused you. Please help and thanks in advance!

Many of the UCs do have conditions of admission that the student complete the previously stated senior year schedule with a minimum GPA (often 3.0) and no D or F grades.

CSUs may have similar conditions; Cal Poly SLO requires senior year courses to be completed with C or higher grades, for example.

Try searching for “conditions of admission” on the schools’ web sites.

If the student is looking at a likely D or F grade, s/he may want to contact the school with such a condition and check whether an exemption is possible before committing to any school.

Is it possible to drop the course, if it is not needed for either the science portion of the a-g requirements or the academic elective portion of the a-g requirements? Of course, any colleges for which applications have already been sent need to be informed of this.

A friend’s son was in exactly that position - failing physics his senior year. His admission to cal poly SLO was revoked. Dropping may be the best option - especially if the other classes are sufficiently academically strong.

Lest these answers panic you, I do want to add that this friend’s son wound up doing just fine. He went to 2 years of a cc and now is at a UC that he loves.

I talked to my counselor and it is too late to drop the class, I hired a tutor and am trying extra hard to get at least a C in the class, however if worst comes to worst and I don’t pass, I do plan on dropping and taking anatomy and physiology honors second semester.

Question is will it effect admission decision if I do decide to take another science class second semester? Or should I just suck it up and struggle through another semester of physics?

Look at ucb’s post regarding min GPA and no D or F. So, as long as Physics 1st sem is is a min of C, it shld be ok that you switched to a different course 2nd sem. You just have to indicate that change when you submit your UC app.

I want to suggest a few resources you might not know about. The first is the “Physics Problem Solver” book. This is like a SAT review book, but on a single subject. You work problems from the chapter that matches your class, then check against the worked-out solution. Learning math/science classes takes, for most people, more than just doing the assigned problems in the book. You need to practice and practice until you get it. In college many people find themselves spending 6-10 hours per week outside of class on math/science subjects.

Another resource is the internet. If your teacher’s explanations aren’t clear, or if you’d just like another take on it, there are tons of free courses available on iTunes, public teaching websites, etc. The Teaching Company also has courses, which you might be able to borrow from a library.
