I'm applying as an engineering major for most of these universities.

-3.66 UC GPA Weighted Capped (Got a few B's my sophomore and junior years)
-4.25 UC GPA Weighted uncapped

- Study abroad program at UC Berkeley for Engineering during summer 2013

Grades and ECs are low but your test scores are quite low (especially the Math SAT)… I think the test scores will keep you out of USC, UCLA, UCB, UCSD, NYU. The rest are definite possibilities.

I disagree with the previous posters. Although your test scores are certainly low, your extreme downward trend and your capped UC GPA are much bigger problems. Your GPA alone makes even UCSC and UCR unlikely to accept you.

I have heard of several students who were accepted to the mid-tier UCs with lower test scores than yours, but I have never heard of anyone who was accepted to the mid-tier UCs with your GPA.

UCLA/UCB/USC/UCSD: Reach
UCSB/UCI/UCD: Low Reach/High Match
UCSC: High Match/Match
UCR: Match

Your GPA (unweighted and UC weighted) along with test scores are below average for most of the schools on your list.
Your EC’s are competitive with good leadership. If you wrote outstanding essays, they should give a boost to make some of the reaches into matches. I do not see any safeties on your list. I hope you have some good backups. Good Luck.

@Richardconter: All applicants including in-state have to cap their UC GPA for the 8 extra honors points. In-state only have the advantage of using UC approved honors classes, if they do not have 4 AP’s (10-11th). You are not at a disadvantage in calculating your UC GPA. Also the UC’s will note how rigorous of a HS schedule you have based on the amount of AP classes taken. The only disadvantage you have as an OOS applicant is financial since you will receive little to no financial aid towards your OOS tuition.

@gumbymom If you don’t mind, could you calculate my UC gpa for me? It should be 3.66 capped with 4 honors/ap and 3.82 with 8 honors/ap

UC GPA is 3.82 with 4 AP classes or 8 semesters (8 extra honors points). Average UC GPA for UCLA/UCB is around a 4.2. Average UC GPA for UCSD is 4.13 and average UC GPA’s for UCI/UCD/UCSB is approximately 4.05. UCSC, UCR and UCM would be matches. Your test scores and your UC GPA is below average for all the above except for the 3 match schools. I personally would not pay $55K/year to attend. Good Luck and I hope you have some backups.

@Gumbymom Thank you so much for your help. Will applying for residency be easier for me since I was born in Los Angeles? I moved to Las Vegas when I was 6.

Doesn’t matter where you were born, it matters if you have paid your California taxes. Residency is really tough to get in Our state if you come for educational purposes.
