Forgive me if this has already been discussed, I couldn't seem to find it anywhere.

What is the format for extracurricular activities on the UC app? How many activities are there room for, and what does it ask you about each activity?

Also, if I'm not able to gather how many hours I put into each activity, do you think it would be a bad idea to leave the amount blank? I've heard people say to just guess if you don't know or whatever, but I would rather not unless I think I'm really close.

I'm kind of dreading this section, because I don't have the best ECs, and none of them are really school/club based and I don't really have many leadership roles. I have a lot of volunteer hours, but other than that not the best.. Would it be a bad idea to put things like practicing piano and running a youtube channel? Lol I feel stupid asking but other than that kind of stuff I only have like 4 or 5 ECs. I'm mostly looking at Berkeley which is why I guess this stuff is important.

Thanks again. I know these sound like dumb questions, but couldn't figure them out and I need to start piecing my app together because I will be be pretty busy in October and November.

I would like to know this too

From what I remember (I applied like two years ago so it’s a bit fuzzy), the EC section was divided as work/internship experience, activities/volunteering/leadership, and awards/honors, or something along those lines. Each section had room for at most 5 things, partly to force students with a lot of ECs to only list those they considered most important. The general format for the activities part was what the activity was, a short (sentence or two) description of it/what you did, when you participated in the activity (ie 2012-2014), and how many hours a week you participated.

Overall it’s pretty short and not really something to stress out about. As for time put into things, I think so long as you’re in the right ballpark they won’t care. For example, if you spent an hour a week volunteering at some event and put on the app that you did 20 hours/week of it, that’s a blatant lie and they might get mad if they do check up on your activities. If you put that you did something for 15 hours a week but it was really closer to 17, no one’s going to care/notice. I wouldn’t leave it blank if you can come up with a relatively close estimate, but I don’t think it’s a huge deal.

Thanks a lot, that is very helpful!
