UC App Open Until 11:59 12/1/2011 Due To Power Outages

"Why shouldn’t high school students wait until the last minute to finish their applications for the University of California? What could get in their way? Is a destructive wind storm suddenly going to swoop through Southern California and wipe out electrical and Internet service?

As a matter of fact, yes.

So for those malingering wind-blown students who were without electricity and were not able to submit their online UC applications to meet the Wednesday night deadline, university officials have a message: Calm down, all is not lost.

UC spokeswoman Dianne Klein said that there is a little-discussed one-day grace period that always has been in place for applications started on the UC server before the Nov. 30 deadline. For those students, the new (and true) deadline is 11:59 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 1. And if applicants still lack electrical power, they can contact a special help desk and offer proof of their difficulties and an extension may be offered “on a case-by-case basis,” Klein said.

The phone number is (800) 523-2048 (in California) or (925) 808-2181 (outside California); hours are Monday-Friday, 8:15 a.m.-4:30 p.m. The email contact is: ucinfo@ucapplication.net, and applicants should mark the email to the attention of Mary Jacobson.

For ultra-slowpokes who were planning to start and complete the entire application in the final pre-deadline hours Wednesday, UC also will offer similar wiggle room if there was a true emergency, she added. But that will require more than just a plea from a parent. Students should send an email and include the time, length and location of the power outage. Applicants must also include proof such as a news item about the outage, a statement from their power company or another external source that can be verified, Klein said.

But the best thing is for students to find a library or someplace else with power and internet service and “just get it in before 11:59 pm tonight,” Klein said Thursday afternoon."

Thought any of you who might have (gasp!) missed a deadline would appreciate this.

Wow. I was going to apply to UC as a last minute thing just because but I had no idea that the deadline was this close. I’m not even going to attempt it in 2.5 hrs.
